- Q:i was told that by making a solar panel they cause more pollution than they will end up getting rid of. Is that true?
- Absolutely not. This is a myth. The energy payback of a solar panel far outweighs its cost. With current technology (which is vastly improving every year), the payback begins in about -4 years depending on climate. This means that after -4 years, the solar panel has generated the same amount of energy that was used in its entire creation up until the point that it was installed. The panel will then continue to generate power for another 20-25 years at 90-98% capacity if properly maintained. The U.S. Department of Energy has conducted extensive studies on the subject and the results (which i'm quoting) can be viewed on their PV Faq page...

- They don't sell them by the square inch. It costs about $0 per watt of generating capacity. Unless you are connected to the grid you will need a battery bank to storage power for rainy days. As for the effects of weather ... you can probably make a cover out of plywood... but if your house blows away the solar panel goes with it. Before you buy one make sure your insurance covers it.

- Look at the graph data that looks like a rotated L. That is what voltage as a function of current characteristically behaves. The highest voltage value is called open circuit voltage (Voc). The current at lowest voltage value is called short circuit current (Isc). If you notice, a second curve is plotted that looks like a hill. That curve is power output as a function of voltage. At the peak of said hill, you get the most utility of your PV module, as you output the maximum power possible, and that is the nameplate value for the PV module's power rating.

- The energy from the sun is converted to electicity, so there's very little heat produced. I doubt the snow would melt. Try finding a way to scrape it off or have them rotate so you can let the snow fall off.
