- Q: I'm building a solar panel for the first time and have the tabbed solar cells. I put together 4 strings of 9 cells. And the cells are each 0.55V, 3.6A.Because I'm going to be using the panel indoors and leaning it up against a window pane, I put them in a 24x36 inch poster-size frame. The frame has a plexiglass cover and a thick cardboard backing. My question to you is this. Will the cardboard backing up against the metal underside (positive side) of the solar cells be ok? I don't know if it may catch fire or if holes may burn through when there's full sun.My guess here is it should be ok. But maybe I'm wrong. If I am wrong, or if something should be put in between, please let me know what I should use.Thanks everyone!

They say that the combination MAY reduce your electric bill. Nothing I can see to back-up their claims. Hmmmmm. And they offer, if you can get it; central air conditioning that runs on natural gas. Again, possibly cheaper than using electricity.Has any one actually tested to find out if solar panels and/or natural gas DOES, or DOES NOT save you any money to make it worth the bother?
- if you use solar panels it will make electric to run anything you want . it depends how much they charge to build the solar system if it makes sense, money wise. but if your asking if solar power makes enough electric to power an A/C the answer is , you bet your azz .. but only when the sun shines Nellie

The crystalline kind of panel that goes for $2.35 a watt is more like $.50 wholesale, and that's for a major distributor, not a (forgive me) small order of $60k, which is less than one container. There is a coming glut of panels, and prices will fall, but that means both wholesale and retail prices. I'm not saying it won't work, but do good research. For example, I think there are many more than 3 or 4 online shops for solar panels. Investigate shipping an warehousing costs. Investigate whether Home Depot really does not offer installation (every time I go in there, I see a guy handing out flyers for installation). And research carefully how much it will cost to provide installation. The typical install requires skilled and licensed workers. It won't be legal in most places unless someone has the necessary certifications. It's not just a matter of screwing the things to the roof. Any roof penetration has to potential to leak if done improperly. And any electrical wiring has the potential for burning the house down. Whatever business you finally pursue, research carefully, or that $60k will flee from you like a jackrabbit.

A no name knockoff from overseas might prove to be difficult to find a few years down the road. One good place to check is the Go Solar California website. They have proof of performance testing on hundreds of panels.
