- Q: During the summer my house uses about .47 kw/h I am wondering what solar panel do I need to cover most or all the electric bill. A link would be helpful too :)
- The correct answer depends on how much total energy you use during the day and whether or not your utility allows something called net-metering. In net-metering, if you make more power during daylight hours than you consume, the meter goes backwards. Then at night the meter goes forward again. With net-metering you only pay for the difference.
- Q: Lower solar panel/wind turbine prices allow wider applications, hence a great help to a greener mother earth!
- go okorder / they sell books on how to build solar panels and wind turbines, along with a lot of other things that could help you live off grid. And a lot of the books were things that could be made with turn of the century (900 not 2000) technology
- Q: A local air conditioning company is advertising combining their (newly installed) central air conditioning system for homes, with roof solar panels. They say that the combination MAY reduce your electric bill. Nothing I can see to back-up their claims. Hmmmmm. And they offer, if you can get it; central air conditioning that runs on natural gas. Again, possibly cheaper than using electricity.Has any one actually tested to find out if solar panels and/or natural gas DOES, or DOES NOT save you any money to make it worth the bother?
- if you use solar panels it will make electric to run anything you want . it depends how much they charge to build the solar system if it makes sense, money wise. but if your asking if solar power makes enough electric to power an A/C the answer is , you bet your azz .. but only when the sun shines Nellie
- Q: I thought they were going to make solar powered cars and solar power plants among other things. It was only nearly 0 years ago that solar power was the big thing. Just curious, why did it die out?
- The technology did not die out. It is in fact quite alive and well, and there exist many different manufacturers of solar panels and devices utilizing them. The problem is that the technology has not yet advanced sufficiently to generate large amounts of power with solar panels, at least not with panels of any practical size and weight. You can easily buy a panel which will trickle-charge your car's battery during the day, but nothing that can generate anywhere near the power required to actually move a car's mass at any significant speed. You would need to buy panels with a very large surface area to make any significant amount of power, and these panels would be very heavy and very expensive.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on airports?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on airports. In fact, many airports around the world have already embraced solar energy to meet their power needs and reduce their carbon footprint. These panels are typically installed on rooftops, parking structures, or vacant land within the airport premises. The use of solar panels in airports not only helps generate clean and renewable energy but also contributes to cost savings and long-term sustainability.
- Q: right now, you would need a suitable number of solar panels just to power house that can take up a lot of real estate. so my question is, is it feasible to create something that absorbs more of the suns energy like a magnet it would suck it up. the point of doing this would be so that we wouldnt need so much space so many panels just to power home for example.i hope thats coherent.
- No, it's not possible to make solar panels that suck in photons like a magnet. In current physics, the only way to do that would be to make a near-black-hole-like structure that sucks photons in due to its high gravity. Not only would that be prohibitively expensive and currently technologically impossible, it would destroy its surrounding area. Edit: idlenesss - My whole point is that increasing the photons-per-area is currently impossible, and that's what the question was about.
- Q: I have four power packs for solar lights. They have 3 AA .2volt batteries of 2450 mAh capacity installed in series for a total supply voltage of 4 volt maximum for the lights. I want to charge all four packs at once off a single 6 volt solar panel. With the four packs wired in parallel, what capacity output (wattage) panel do I need to charge the batteries in an 8 hour day?
- 3 cells in series makes a 3.6volt 2.4AH battery. You multiply the volts but not the capacity. In parallel would be .2volts, triple capacity. So 4 packs in parallel is 9.8AH. Rule of thumb for charging a flat battery is divide capacity by 0 for amps and charge for 5 hours. amp at 6 volts is doable, that would be 6 watts People who make batteries and solar cells usually over-rate them so I doubt that a solar panel of less than 20 watts rating will fully charge these batteries if they are flat. I'd google to see how you might control the charge current with a simple circuit.
- Q: Can solar panels be used in areas with frequent lightning storms?
- Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with frequent lightning storms. However, it is important to install proper lightning protection measures to ensure the safety of the solar panel system. This may include grounding the panels and using surge protectors or lightning arresters to divert the electrical charge from lightning strikes.
- Q: i was reading the popular science magazine and i saw that they might make a Sun Powered it Absolutely NOT possible to make a car with a Solar Panel? I dont see any harm in making it..
- it's possible, but the oil company don't want you to, besides solar-powered cars need to be quite big to have those panels mounted on to provide the needed power, thus it'll take up alot of space on the road. they can't be as powerful as gas-powered cars in terms of speed hauling power. maybe they should make 2-seaters for city users, that'll cut down on the pollution ease up the gas prices. of course, they can make a hybrid car that uses an alternative power, like gas/solar or dry cell/solar to solve the problem... parking-meters with a power-plugs for you to recharge while you park.
- Q: Does anyone own any and would you recommend them? right now i only own solar stake lights and i use them during the summer in my yard. But during the winter i take them out because they don't charge well. I live in toronto canada where it snows a lot during the winter, would it even be worth it to buy solar panels? Would they get covered with snow if the were mounted on my roof and get ruined? I plan on buying some when i purchase my own home.Any info would be appreciated:)
- Toronto would not be higth on my list of solar panel worthy locales. They are a bit pricey and are only cost effective in climates and locations with lots of direct sunlight. But if you could safely say you get direct light on your rood nearly every day, they could work. Wind turbines are getting better... especially omnidirectional dome type turbines. But again they are a bit costly, and work best if you believe you get direct wind for at least half the day. If your roof is reasonably flat and structurally sound, a solar hot water generator can be quite cost effective. Essentially it is a panel of corrugated metal under two thin transparencies of plastic. Water is pumped up to it and as it runs along the corrugation, the trapped heat under the plastic heats it up nicely. They are cheap to buy and easy to build and install, and will completely remove the need for a dedicated hot water heating system. Once again, it really depends on the precise location and construction of your house. Do a search for solar heat in your area. If it is cost effective, someone will be offering...
