Q: do i remove toilet, vinyl tile and sink cabinet. under lay for tile? what holds ceramic tile down?
Yes its best to remove everything but the cement board is 3/8 to 1/2 in. thick and the tile being placed on it is about a 1/4 to 3/8 depending on the amount of thin set used. Can you place a threshold down at the doorway to accommodate for this difference in height? And if the wood below the tile floor is not at least 1 in. thick then the flexing of the floor will always cause cracking of the grout lines if not the tiles them self. These are a couple things people overlook when wanting a tile floor. Good Luck
Q: We are planning small home improvements during the next year to prepare our house for sale. I would like to switch out our 4 year old formica countertop and replace it with granite tile. A slab is out of the question due to cost. We have a small kitchen and would need about 40 tiles. When I looked on the internet for costs, it seems I can get these tiles for under $300.00? Does that sound right, I think that‘s less than what we paid for the Formica. Also, my next question is can you use the same tile for the entryway, which is next to the kitchen, or it that a little too much of the same thing?
The tile will be cheaper, using a slab is always more expensive. Remember that the tile doesn't include the installation cost either. You can use it in the entryway just remember that granite is very slippery when used as flooring and caution must be taken. To get the best look out of granite tile for the countertop ensure that they are laid with very little grout space. Ensure you hire a good experienced tile setter one that has laid granite tile. You want them to ensure that the edges all have the finished edge. This will give you the best look, it's really not a big deal for an experienced installer. Don't use a wood edge and go for the tile, it will last longer and increase the value of your home more than formica. You can often find bullnose edge pieces to lay with your tile unless you are buying a rare granite.
Q: Real tile or those that u just glue on?? why?
I wouldn't invest real tile into a mobile home. I would have to say laminate tile squares...which can be easily applied and look quite nice.
Q: a few tiles are cracked near the sink. How can i fix it temporarily ( is it worth it?) or should i replace the tiles or the whole thing? how would i go about doing that?
You need to chip out the grout and cracked tile, and replace them, if you can find an exact match, otherwise replace them all on that side, then you can either match it to the other side or use another color, or style, like if you have four inch tiles on the remaining side, use subway (rectangular) tiles on the sink side. or go for an checkerboard with square tile in white and an accent color.
Q: HiIs there an adhesive that can be used to spot repair Vinylfloor tiles 18x18 on a basment floor?
You can buy the vinyl tile adhesive used to put down the tiles originally or use the same adhesive even if the tiles were peel stick. You'll need to scrape up the old adhesive though, or the tile will sit a touch higher than the rest and probably come loose again. You can also use contact cement gel. Again a smooth surface is needed. Give both the tile and the floor a generous coat and let the cement dry to the light touch. Then stick the tile down and put a weight on it. That should take care of it.
Q: We are trying to sell our house so I‘m not interested in professionalism...just something that works and looks decent. We have a small full bathroom that has some tile coming off one of the walls. Looking at it, it seems the entire wall of tile is ready to come down. I need to fix this economically and I‘m assuming I need to do the entire wall. Any ideas how I should go about this? Are there large sheets of tile I can just stick up there? Do I need tile board (if that‘s even a real thing), etc...? Thanks all!
tiling a tub /shower surround can be difficult, would recommend hiring a tile guy, just watch them and you will learn alot If you walls are not level and square it can be a hard job to do even with experience If you are still going to try it yourself you have to keep in mind the expense, time and purchase or rental of a wet tile saw (plus snips and a grinder with a diamond cut wheel) Use a good adhesive (mastif) and a 3/8 trowel, keep the tile up at least 1/4' from the edge of your tub Don't forget the schulter strip for the edges You can also mix the grout half and half (sanded and non- sanded), just a little helpful hint Going to Home Depot to get a book is not a bad idea, better yet find out when they are going to do a tiling show, you can learn enough to get by if you ask alot of questions Good luck!
Q: Our house has Asbestos floor tiles throughout. (I had them tested, and they definitely contain asbestos.)The dilemma: Currently these tiles are covered with carpet. The carpet is old and ugly and needs to be replaced. We want to replace it with Laminate flooring.I‘m worried about pulling up the carpet tacks at the edges. Is there a safe way to do that? Also, is it safe to put Laminate flooring over asbestos tiles?
Asbestos okorder and I can provide homeowner consultation on how to safely deal with asbestos floor tile in the home. I can cite study data showing exposure levels associated with certain floor tile removal tasks.
Q: I‘ve seen on many different DIY shows that you can get used tiles that are still in good condition (from a certain place, I just can‘t seem to remember the word) to use in your projects.
Most tile stores throw out tiles every week. They throw out sample boards and broken tiles and generally you can go dumpster diving and pick up quite a few. Some stores will give them to you if you ask. I used to work at a tile store and we threw out tons of tiles all the time. The large stores like Home Depot sometimes have rules that they won't give anything broken away or even sell it but it's worth asking because they're all different. You may be able to find a Habitat Re-Store that has some as well. When they tear out old houses they often recycle rather than toss the items.
Q: I‘m in the process of re-tiling my bathroom and when I took the old tiles off some of the old grout stayed on the walls or in some areas messed up the dry wall surface. I‘m looking for recommendations of how to either remove the old grout from the wall, or how to smooth the surface over the area in order to lay the new tiles. Suggestions?
If a putty knife or even rough sandpaper wont knock it off. It's really not a big deal to knock out the old sheetrock and install new. Just cut your old sheetrock about an inch from where your new tiles will stop, bust out everything in the tiling field, and screw in a new piece. This is easy to do because you dont have to worry about texture or tape and bedding, it's going to be covered by tile. Just make sure you replace the sheetrock with the exact same thickness. It's not as hard as you think.
Q: It is in my kitchen , hall and bath. Is the reason that tiling is so expensive becasue of having to remove the old tile first?
Its not easy by any means, but its something that I feel most home owners could handle over a weekend. I would recommend that you use a large heavy blade floor scrapper and a big hammer. Basically you smack each tile in the center, which breaks the tile loose underneath then you use the scrapper to take everything off to bare wood.
