If you do not have a soldering torch or you are not confident in trying to solder, go to any hardware store and ask for a product called Sharkbite fittings. they install by just pushing over the pipe. That's it. You can come out the other end of the sharkbite fitting with copper or cpvc. I use them all the time. They are the greatest thing out there. i prefer to use cpvc to come out of the sharkbite and because there is no soldering involved, and the cpvc pipe and fittings are cheaper then copper. If you do use the sharkbites it is critical to have a straight cut on the pipe, so invest in a small copper pipe cutter.

In either case the odds are 100% that it will go somehow upward and not down. The real danger is not the trajectory of the vessel. If within a house it probably is not going to go very far before it is empty. The real danger is the huge amount of suddenly released, superheated steam which has indeed exploded houses and killed occupants.
