Production description
A solar panel is a collection of solar cells. Lots of small solar cells spread over a large area can work together to provide enough power to be useful. The more light that hits a cell, the more electricity it produces, so spacecraft are usually designed with solar panels that can always be pointed at the Sun even as the rest of the body of the spacecraft moves around, much as a tank turret can be aimed independently of where the tank is going.
Each module is rated by its DC output power under standard test conditions, and typically ranges from 100 to 365 watts. The efficiency of a module determines the area of a module given the same rated output – an 8% efficient 230 watt module will have twice the area of a 16% efficient 230 watt module.

- Q: I know that if I put solar panels in my home I will get 30% back from the govt. Does that mean if I pay 2K I will get back around a 3K check? Or will my income play a roll where I may not get back as much?
- Not a good answer: CNBC had a news bit, that it can take 0 to 20 years for you to break even in energy costs after installing solar panels. Please don't buy them just for the tax deduction. See if you can google a calculator for this - do research. I have a brother in law that buys anything under the sun just because he gets a tax deduction. I'm sure you're not like that though. Run the numbers of what you will save vs the 2K you will spend You may never break even

- most of the listings are there to get you to send 'em money. some promise a refund if they don't work. good luck getting your money back. it's not going to happen. last, the inverter, and control to feed power back into the grid are expensive. the utility gets to control what you can use, and most often you have to buy it from them. in Calif, the utility has an interest in good solar installations. they provide power during the time of peak demand, so the utility does not have to build/buy the last, most expensive kilowatt. however, (A) any installation that will be at all useful is large, and expensive, and (B) as with all electronics, next year will be better. i'll probably do it. but not yet.
- Q: I'm just geting into electonics and stuff. So I am trying to make a simple USB charger. I'm looking for at least 4 volts output. What I've got is two solar panels (detached) a 4 AA battery holder, and a circuit board with an led on it (took the solar panels out of old lawn lights. I need more charge out of my panels (I think) so I tried attaching them. I soldered the positive wire from one to the positive connection on the other and negative wire to negative connection. After doing so and checking the multimeter, it says I have no output at all. How do you connect them?
- You have to look at the power output of the cell. The first consideration has to do with voltage. A single cell with no load might output one volt or less. Wiring cells in series would double that output, at least in theory. (Internal resistance will lower the actual voltage.) You've wired the cells in parallel, however. Try unsoldering one electrode and then measure voltage output of each cell. There is still the issue of current output. I don't know if there will be enough with your setup. How many cells are there and what kind of batteries were they charging?
- Q: I know what they do and how they work, but at this point they're expensive, don't always produce enough electricity as needed, and can't be used when there's no sun, as in half the day. Wouldn't wind power seem so more efficient? Or if they do use solar panels, how about putting them in the desert. But I really believe that research money should go to fusion generators since that's the future and the answer to our problems. Which is best in your opinion?
- It absolutly depends on where you live. I don't have enough wind in my area for a wind turbine to do any good. I just installed solar, the system will pay for itself in about 6 years. I didn't get a system that will zero out my electcity usage, but it will dramatically be decreased. I can always add to it in a few years. Since I plan on living here forever I will see a great financial benift.

- Q: I was watching an idiot abroad, and I saw a family that lived in tent like huts, with no plumbing. And they had a solar panel, now if they can afford it, I know I can. Where do you get cheap ones?
- We are having solar panels installed this Friday. Call a company called Solar City. You can work it through them 3 different ways, you can buy them out right and reap 00% savings, or lease them (like we are) and sign a contract. You won't pay a dime to lease them but your savings won't be as much. The plus side is, you don't have the huge expense either and they are responsible for the maintenance. Lastly, you can lease as the latter option, and purchase during any point of the lease at a pro-rata cost. You can also chose to buy the panels cheaply when your lease is up, but they may be very outdated by then. We have found Solar City top notch, highly trained, extremely polite and considerate. We found them set up at Home Depot. It took from about last January, I think it was, until this Friday, for installation, and then it will be about another 6 weeks until the service is actually turned on. Government red tape, etc. Good luck. I hope this helped.
