Q: We have a popocrn ceiling and in one room, it has some damage so we have to fix it. We will get an asbestos test since the house was built in 1963, but have heard that to have certified pros come in and remove it would cost over $3000 for just one room, Since we can't afford this, I was wondering if it would be ok to have a contractor spray (non-asbestos) popcorn ceiling over it. This would encapsulate the fibers, wouldn't it? Please only answer if you're an expert-thanks!!!
I'm not an expert. Just so you know. However, I worked in the painting industry for years. Popcorn ceilings are messy to remove, but not that difficult. Go to your local paint store and buy a roll (not the little packets called drop cloths) of plastic film and a good quality masking tape (3M is the best). Mask with tape and plastic the entire room - turn it into a giant plastic bag. Spray the ceiling with water (it really doesn't take much - you can use a spritz bottle) and give it a chance to soak in. Spray it again and start peeling the popcorn off with a wide spatula. If you have asbestos, the water will keep the dust from getting into the air and into your lungs. The popcorn ceiling should just scrap right off. A little water, a little scraping - bare ceiling. Collect the mess into the plastic and put the whole thing in the trash. You can even do one room per weekend, if you want. Now you can do what you want with the ceiling - texture, spray with popcorn (why?, please tell me, why?), smooth plaster finish, whatever you like. It is a bit of work - but it is going to work better than trying to re-spray over your existing popcorn.
Q: Rather than removing redwood siding and inserting batt insulation in non-insulated 2 X 4 framed walls, has anyone had experience with blowing in insulation or injecting 2 pound foam? (probably only one foot at a time with foam), else it would blow out the sheetrock in the interior.
I saw on This Old House when they blew in cellulose insulation from the outside. They drilled a hole about 2 feet from the floor level and another hole about 2 feet from ceiling level. They blew it in starting at the bottom until they saw the cellulose start to blow out the top hole. Then went to the top hole and blew it in until they heard the machine whine meaning it couldnt push anymore. The purpose with 2 holes was to make sure the whole cavity was filled. In your case you can take off one piece of siding for each stud cavity if its vertical siding or take off two rows at the correct heights. (That is if you have plywood/osb on the outside). The spray foam will just be too hard to fill correctly without taking down the sheetrock.
Q: I'm renting out a condo (1 BR + Loft) and it has a high ceiling. I want to soundproof the living room and house more, and I was thinking about dropping down a wire or something from the ceiling and lowering the ceiling essentially with panels of some sort. I was initially thinking of dropping painting canvas' or something, poking holes in them and putting lights in it to make it look presentable and nice. Is this possible? And what do you call that? Dropped ceiling? Suspended ceiling? And what kind of material should I look at in order to do this?
It's called a drop ceiling or suspended acoustical ceiling. The panels can be made from anything. Plastic, wood, mineral fibers. I would have the correct material for a ceiling such as this. You need to check the building code regulations for drop ceilings.Painting canvases are not appropriate for residential ceiling installation. You would be violating fire and building code regulations. Don't risk a lawsuit. The ceiling panels are fire rated and are made specifically to withstand higher heat and light fixtures. Besides, the drop ceiling will make the condo a little warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer by having a dead space for an insulation barrier. This will save your tenant some money.
Q: If a mineral lab at a university carries amphibole (asbestos), isn't that a major health hazard? Why would students be allowed to handle samples without precautions, figuring out the Mohs scale number etc. for this mineral?
Asbestos isn't always bad. There are actually more types of risk-free asbestos than there is of hazardous asbestos. Asbestos is the name given to a number of naturally occurring fibrous minerals with high tensile strength, the ability to be woven, and resistance to heat and most chemicals. Because of these properties, asbestos fibers have been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, including roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper and cement products, textiles, coatings, and friction products such as automobile clutch, brake and transmission parts. The Toxic Substances Control Act defines asbestos as the asbestiform varieties of: chrysotile (serpentine); crocidolite (riebeckite); amosite (cummingtonite/grunerite); anthophyllite; tremolite; and actinolite. The more hazardous types of asbestos, such as the above mentioned, are very fibrous, and the specimen you see in lab, I doubt are a risk to you or any other student for that matter.
