I guess it depends as to the level of comfort you want to maintain during an outage. Do you want to run all the AC units while on generator power or can you be comfortable with only one running at a time? Needless to say natural gas is the most dependable fuel in most cases. Also, there are no storage problems as with petrol and diesel. A 20 KW Generac natural gas generator with a 200 amp automatic transfer switch can be purchased for less than $5,000.00. I can only guess at the cost of installation. We had a devastating ice storm here 2 years ago and I have since installed many of these whole house systems including my own. In most cases the installation costs were less than $1500.00. (plumbing and electrical) This should power your home adequately in most emergency situations. The noise level is easily controlled with the placement of the generator in relation to your home's living and sleeping areas. Operating costs will exceed your normal energy cost as the generator will run at full speed 24/7 and cost will also increase in relation to fuel comsumption depending on the load. Probably about double your normal energy cost. Good luck!
Q:i have a plan to supply electric power supply to a colony of around 250 houses each have a load of approximately : 3 x1.5 ton air conditioners and all the other stuff of household use. voltage required is 400v 3 phase or 240 volt single phase. my question is if some one can please calculate the requirement of load for the above requirement and what size of generator is required for this load. thanks
With that large a system, you should get a quote from professionals. You need better numbers on power usage, both average and peak. And the pros can help with that. See if you can get a sample of 10 electric power bills and use that as an average to calculate the average power for all 250. Peak is difficult. They each have 4.5 ton worth AC? must be a hot climate. You can use 1.2 kW per ton, so that is 5.4 kW per house or 1.4 MW total just for the ACs Is there electric stoves, hot water, etc? that could double the above number. So we are up to perhaps 3 MW already. At that level, you probably need a higher voltage system, perhaps a 6 kV distribution system. That costs money, plus all the transformers, one per 2-4 house, plus all the underground digging. Assuming you want this underground, not on poles. Again, contact a company that does this, such as Siemens, Bosch, GE, they would be happy to give you a good quote. edit: when you look at the ratio of peak power to average power, you will see a large number, as high as 10. that means you could require a (eg) 3 MW generator although the average power is only 0.3 MW. That means the efficiency is low and the costa are high. That is why large power distribution systems are much better, as the peaks are not nearly as high, and also power companies have special units that are usually offline and come online to handle the peaks.

In AC side connect a series high current Choke with less no of turns take the out put use a High current bridge Diodes with suitable heat sink.For regulating out put ,In the series choke place a Dc winding that can be excited by a separate dc circuit, Increase saturation will give same voltage decrease excitation will give drop in voltage.It is like magnetic Amplifier.Set the out put voltage with pre set point or a regulating circuit.I have given rough Idea If you want further detail PM me (This only cheapest method unless you have use thyristor or others to con troll may be expensive)

I have a natural gas line, and gas furnace, so I only use about 1500 watts at peak times, so I figure a 3k watt generator will more than cover my needs.SOUND is a huge factor. I have the worst neighbors in the world and I really need something quiet. I'm looking for something with less than 60 ddb.I have seen a lot of propane generators that look good, but I dont know if they can be used with natural gas easily. I think so, but would love to hear if thats true, and they dont have the standby plug feature, which I need to save my fish tank, any know if this can be easily changed by a skilled electrician?Thank you. OK - You have elaborated - At that voltage you will have about 2400 Amperes. I P/E You have a generator putting out about 1 million watts. Divide that by the voltage and you get the usable amperes at rated voltage. Drop that to 380 3 phase Y would transformer. With loss through this you will have about 2352 amps. But the voltage has dropped from 415 to 380 so the amperes will go up. You will have about 2500 amps available at the output side of the transformer. Remember this is TOTAL amperes across all 3 legs of the windings. Remember that The Power is ALWAYS equal to the VOltage X the Amperage. If one goes up the other goes down. That will NOT change. Transformers are 98% efficient so you must calculate the initial loss through the primary transformet before you calculate the oiwer available for your main buss. If you have 1000 KVA before the transformer you will have 980 KVA at the out side. At 380 V, 3 phase you will have 2578 Amps. 980,000VA/380V 2578.94A OK So far? For safety you have to derate the system by 20% to prevent overload and burnout of the Generator or transformer. you have 2000 amps at 380 volts. That is on your main buss in the master control panel. You have a master breaker there feeling smaller buss lines. On each of these is one breaker per machine OR you can take sub feeder lines to sub panels throughout the factory. From these sub panels you can distribute 3 phase for motors and secondary panels for 110 or 200 single phase for lighting and hand tools. This is so complex and I want to tell you so much. How about I go there and do it.
