Q:I am doing this project to find eco friendly alternatives for businesses. So how is electricity in it generated. Also.why is the pollution of water bad? I mean i realize that it kills marine life, and it affects biodiversity, but how does it affect the wold, or even us humans???
Newer cruise ships have diesel generators that produce enough electricity to run everything; water desalination plants, ships power, heating, recycling/garbage equipment, electric motors on pods that act both as propellers and thrusters so the ships don't need tugboats most of the time. Fish live in the water, people eat fish, someday we might have to have desalination plants for city water systems.
Q:I need to run a fridge on a small power generator that don't have enough staring power to run it , would adding a huge industrial capacitor make it possible ?
A capacitor won't work because its storage capacity is far too low. A lot of batteries might work if it is a DC fridge. If it is AC then a capacitor or batteries will only explode if anything; it's not a match. Your best bet is a large power resistor and a switch, or a high wattage rheostat. Assuming 120 volts, they would be somewhere in the ballpark of 10 to 100 ohms and 1000 watts for either one. You use it to reduce the power sent to the fridge from the generator, then after the fridge motor gets going you gradually provide more power to it. That will keep you from overloading the generator. In the case of the rheostat you wire it in series with one of the power leads and slowly turn the dial until you finally reach zero ohms. For the resistor you do the same, with a switch in parallel to it. So once the fridge starts cranking slowly then you flip the switch for full power. You might do multiple resistors in series with eachother for more gradual steps. In series means you select one of the generator output wires and cut it. Or if you want to keep it intact, do this with an extension cord that you connect to the generator. Each of the two leads on the power resistor or rheostat gets soldered to one of the cut wires. Each of the two leads on a 10 amp switch (assuming 120 volts), gets soldered to the same two spots. The switch begins off. If you use a rheostat then you don't need a switch; you adjust the dial on the rheostat instead. Start it at high resistance and gradually reduce to zero. As always be careful around high voltage. Heat shrink tubing is a good way to cover dangerous bare wire. Electrical tape might fall off over time. Also be aware that the power resistor or rheostat will get hot until a few minutes after you bypass the power resistor or turn the rheostat to zero.

Well, unless you're supplying a purely resistive load (nothing but filament lamps and radiant heaters -- no motors, transformers, switched-mode supplies or fluorescent lamps), you generally need a generator rated for about 1.2 to 1.5 times as many kVA as you have kilowatts. So in your case, a couple of megaVA.
Q:I am considering buying a back-up generator system for my newly bought home, the only problem is that my home is 4,947sq. ft, and I seem to find a single generator that is capable of powering my entire, will buying a few portable or large sized stand-by generators solve my problem?
Multiple generators will only magnify the problem. Getting a properly sized generator and transfer panel will make backup power connection quick and safe. Determine the size of generator required. Do you want an automatic start system or will a manual connection be suitable? Choose a fuel type. Gasoline is by far the most common and easiest fuel, but has issues with long term storage. Diesel is better for long term storage. If your home is equipped with natural gas or propane those could be used to power the generator as well. Read through my generator page for other ideas.

If you are going to use a small generator, natural gas will be likely to cost less than diesel; but I still think buying from PGE will cost less. Possible exception: You need power in the middle of nowhere, for a short time, and PGE will charge lots of money to run a line and new transformer to the location. (In this case, you still may wish to *rent* the generator)
Q:Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. Am I mistaken? - And I mean no offense to the great people of Japan who so valiantly dealt with the terrible tsunami crisis that I admire this very much. Thank you.
Yes you are mistaken. The Fukushima station was designed to withstand average tsunami that had occurred in that area. However the tusnami that hit was much larger than any seen before in that area, or in recorded human history for that matter. Even if you could design a facility to withstand a 200 or even 500 year disaster, eventually you'll encounter something even larger, and then you'll be right back here whining about why did they only design the structure for a 500 year disaster, blah blah blah. Furthermore, such a facility would be prohibitively expensive and over engineered. Was it a risk to only design something to withstand a once-in-a-century event? Sure, but there's no such thing as 0% risk.
Q:I just learned there are 2 cycle diesel engines.What machines use them?Also,Why does Jeep still use an in-line 6 cylinder as opposed to a V-6?
two stroke diesels are still in use today most of them are in the marine field powering large boats and alot are still in generators and you still see quite a few in buses. I've also seen one on a drag strip. as for the in line six vs. the v6 the jeep is well known for an excellent trail vehicle of witch torque is desired at lower rpm and the the inline engine does just that it provides ample toque for the jeeps stock size for most trails.
Q:As the generator is for emergency, so it stopped for long time and only run for preventive maintenance, so its not accomulate running time, what is the standard to evaluate the need for maintenance ?
First make sure the fuel is fresh periodically. Old fuel deteriorates makes it hard it start and run. Second check the oil see if it is clean, check the oil filter too. Third check the fuel filter, change once a year if not used because of bad / old fuel. Forth Check the out put of the engine / voltage / oil pressure / amperage / operating temperature / current fuses / transfer switches are working properly. Listen and make sure the engine is running smooth, no misses. Should be good to go then.
Q:Hi everybody. well I buyed a welding machine, and I need a portable generator for use the welding machine, but I dont know the generator capacity to use it, if the welding machine is 50 to 250 amps, but I just use from 100 to 200 amps, Can I use a 6000 watss Generator? or I need more power?
About 15KW is needed to run a welder. Preferable is a diesel drive unit. Read the label plate on the welder, it will give the maximum draw needed for the supply side. Double that for the generator rating needed.
