Q:We have recently moved into a house in Australia with a tin roof. There is a layer of 5cm batts on the rafters in the roof space, but the temp is 10-15 degrees C higher up there than in the house (with all the windows and doors open). I don't want to get air-conditioning, is there another way to insulate the roof and cool the house?: put insulation above the ceiling (not on the rafters) and add vents on each side of the attic....

All the heat hit the aluminum roof: Spray on expanding foam is best, paint on radiant barrier may work, blow in insulation in attic (cellulose or fiberglass) or put 12"x12" Styrofoam ceiling tiles on the ceiling, they look decent and not to expensive, installs with latex adhesive or staples. Q:I already have fiberglass in the attic, but would like to add more.: Your best angle is to go with blow in fiberglass. ownes corning and Johns mansville both make good blow in fiberglass. Menards and Home depot in our area will lend you a blow in machine for free but make sure you have 2 people to run it and that you have a TIGHT sealed face mask for the guy in the attic along with safety goggles. No way around it either that guy in the attic is gonna get itchy, so expect that now. I put blow in cellulose over my attic fiberglass bats to bring it up to R-50 but i regret it now. I should have stuck with fiberglass. I did some research after the fact and there is some flammability issues with the cellulose i used and on top of that it is seriously dusty so i cant store anything in the attic space anymore. Cellulose was cheaper and the "green" choice but if i could reverse time I would have gone fiberglass blow in.

Q:i live in a tropical country and i need to insulate my roof to block off the heat from the sun...which insulation would best help me? aluminum foil with foam, real foil with foam or PE with foam? pls help...thank u so much!: look into a product called "Snow Roof". You roll it on like paint and it will lower inside temp 10-20 degrees.

Q:Have a patio with metal roof, gets very hot during summer. Will Great Stuff insulate and stick to hot roof during summer? Thanks: Great Stuff (and similar products) stick to just about anything...and with vengeance. If you haven't used it ever, DO NOT let it get on anything else: it is the nastiest. To your Q; It's possible to cut this stuff after it dries up, but still would look like crap. Get some sheets of 'blue board' (an extruded polystyrene) and cut it to fit around structural members. Cuts with a hand saw, knife, and is easy to work. There's a glue for it but I haven't used it on all surfaces. It would look far better than Great Stuff alone.

Q:House is a bi-level. Recently added storm windows to deck off dining room. Having a new rubber roof installed would like to know if we can insulate ceiling to make the room warmer. What product do you suggest we use. we are getting conflicting answers, some say you can insulate others say the ceiling needs to breath having a rubber roof install. Please advise.: Your other answerer is correct. The little plastic pieces that he speaks of are sometimes called baffles. They look like they are corregated or wavy like the inside of cardboard. These are essential to letting air flow in the attic space. Another item that you must have are vents on the soffits or overhangs on either side of the roof. Air has to get in there somehow. There are alot of homes that are not ventilated properly and the roof decking or plywood gets discolored and rots from the inside out. Sometimes this can happen in as little as 5 years, depending on your geographical location. Rubber roofing is usually put on a flat roof system. If you do not have access to inside the framing, you cannot insulate or it will be very difficult to get insulation in there properly. There are so many variables with different houses and locations. Q:Above the trailer roof is a metal pitched roof with no soffit and lots of air-flow. I plan to recess the insulation 6&quot; to allow airflow. There is a suggestion that I need a vapor barrier. If I use a vapor barrier, won’t water collect between the roof and the barrier. I was thinking if using strapping crosswise every 4” to act as a channel for water runoff. Q:i like to put a layer of sand in roofing instead of insulation. it's fireproof and insulates better. plus it's free. how much weight can ceiling board handle? I find about 15 inches poured into the roof works fine so far. Saves me about $1600 each house built: first sand is very heavy and will probably exceed the loading on the roof and walls the extra reinforcing you would need to make the house SAFE would far outway any savings
