Q: I usually use plastic tampons but sometimes i use cardboard. I was just wondering whats the difference and what kind do you use?
i personally like plastic better. they are way easier to put in and they are slimer. the cardboard i hate. i find them hard to put in.
Q: I have always been told that plastic is a product of petroleum! How in the heck does oil become the solid plastic used in everything?
Well, I am a chemist. This is a good question. Everything that is carbon based usually comes from the ground as crude oil and gets boiled off in a distillation column, usually the heaviest stuff is the tar used in roads. Anyways, the simplest is polyethylene. How it is made is unique, you need lots of heat and lots of pressure, sometimes up to about 10000psi. This takes the ethylene molecule and makes the chain to together called monomers ( -CH2- ). Plastic is the way it is because there is literally thousands of these monomer chains linked together in long strands to form the plastic that we use and see. Depending on what you add to these plastics you can make it flame proof, you can make it into elastic form like elastics for example, in this case, the molecules bounce back to were they were when they were originally formed after stretching them. You can add colors, etc. Basically almost everything that is carbon based comes from Crude oil from an oil refinery, they don't just make fuel for gas and such, they make MANY things. Hope this helps. Wee Man.
Q: Can agricultural plastic products be used in agroforestry?
Yes, agricultural plastic products can be used in agroforestry. These products, such as plastic mulch, can be employed to enhance soil moisture retention, control weed growth, and improve overall crop yields in agroforestry systems. Additionally, plastic tree guards are commonly used to protect young trees from herbivores and provide them with a favorable microclimate for growth. However, it is essential to consider the environmental impact and proper disposal of these plastic materials to ensure sustainable agroforestry practices.
Q: for example,plastic bags,plastic bottles etc.....
Most plastic bags are produced using oil. Oil drilling is harmful to the environment and our addiction to oil is making our nation less secure, while damaging our economy. (Though of course there are other problems with security and economy.) In addition, plastic bags that are not recycled will eventually end up in a landfill or in the ocean. Plastic does not even begin to biodegrade for hundreds of years. This allows it plenty of time to wreak havoc in ecosystems. For instance, sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, and eat them. The plastic blocks their digestive tracts, causing painful deaths. Have you ever heard of the Pacific Garbage Patch? It's a plastic continent, at least twice the size of Texas, floating in the Pacific. It's composed of waste, most of which originated on land. Recycling plastic bags is essential, but even this uses considerable energy, which pollutes the air. Banning plastic bags would alleviate these problems. However, plastic must be replaced with reusable bags, not necessarily paper. The problem is, people are accustomed to cheap, convenient lifestyles, and many are unwilling to switch to reusable bags. But I use cloth bags at Target and Winn-Dixie, and I find them to be much more convenient than plastic or paper, because they are sturdier and hold more stuff. So the only real disadvantage that I can think of is that the plastic bag industry would suffer, which is not good is this economic climate. Others might disagree, but IMHO the environment is more important than big business. A final note: As Plastic bags do not account for all of the plastic waste we produce. Most items in stores are over-packaged and use excessive plastic, because the packaging is used for advertisement, not just to protect the product. In order to solve the problems caused by plastic waste, we must recycle, decrease and/or eliminate all plastic, not just bags.
Q: What are the different sizes available for agricultural plastic products?
The sizes available for agricultural plastic products vary depending on the specific product. Some common sizes include small rolls or sheets for covering individual plants or rows, medium-sized sheets or films for larger areas or greenhouse use, and large rolls or wraps for bundling or protecting hay or silage.
Q: What sizes do nursery trays come in?
Nursery trays come in various sizes, ranging from small ones that can hold a few seedlings to larger trays that can accommodate dozens of plants.
Q: How does plastic bird netting help in protecting crops?
Plastic bird netting helps in protecting crops by creating a physical barrier that prevents birds from accessing and damaging the crops. It acts as a deterrent, stopping birds from eating or pecking at the produce, thus reducing crop losses and promoting healthier yields.
Q: How are plastic tree shelters removed after plant establishment?
Plastic tree shelters are typically removed after plant establishment by cutting the ties or fasteners that secure the shelter to the tree. The shelter can then be carefully lifted and pulled away from the tree, taking care not to damage any branches or foliage. This process is usually done once the tree has grown sufficiently and no longer requires the support and protection provided by the shelter.
Q: Are there any ground cover plants that are suitable for clay soils?
Yes, there are several ground cover plants that are suitable for clay soils. Some examples include creeping juniper, creeping phlox, creeping thyme, and sweet woodruff. These plants are known for their ability to tolerate and thrive in clay soil conditions.
Q: Are nursery trays suitable for starting vegetable plants?
Yes, nursery trays are suitable for starting vegetable plants. They provide a controlled environment for seed germination and early growth, allowing for easy transplanting once the plants are ready. The trays also help in organizing and managing the seedlings, making it convenient for both home gardeners and commercial growers.
