How to Use a Camera Monopod

A monopod is like a tripod except it only has only one leg and cannot hold a camera independently as a tripod can. Monopods are useful to stabilize shots when you have limited space. They are easy to carry and an ideal solution for taking photographs while hiking or during other activities when a tripod is too bulky.

Instructions:

Technique One
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart comfortably
Position the monopod in front you at an approximate 20-degree angle to your body. This simulates the three legs of a tripod
Bring the camera in toward your chest as close as possible
Hold the monopod with your left hand near the top under the camera while applying gentle pressure downward to prevent slippage
Ready your right hand on the shutter button to shoot the picture

Technique Two
Turn your body to your right so that your left foot is in front and your right foot is in the back
Bend your left leg slightly and concentrate on stabilizing your body so it does not move left, right, front, or back
Place the monopod next to the instep of your right foot and your left upper thigh. The monopod will follow the line of your body and be leaning slightly forward
Hold the monopod with your left hand near the top under the camera while applying gentle pressure downward to prevent slippage
Ready your right hand on the shutter button to shoot the picture

Technique Three
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart comfortably
Bend your knees slightly and maintain a stable stance
Place the monopod between your legs to the back left of your left heel with the leg running close to your left thigh. This wraps the monopod around the inside of your left leg and leans it slightly forward
Hold the monopod with your left hand near the top under the camera while applying gentle pressure downward to prevent slippage
Ready your right hand on the shutter button to shoot the picture
