- I think it is short for polyester resin and basically is a type of plastic. Resins are often use for casting, they are liquid and then get cured and turn hard (various methods). Plated metal is a basic metal with a very thin coat of a different metal on it. e.g. silver plated copper would look silver and tarnish like silver, but if you scratch it you would see the copper color of the metal underneath look through. So instead of it being solid silver it just looks like it.
