Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world, used as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and most non-specialty grout.

It is a fine powder produced by heating materials in a kiln to form what is called clinker, grinding the clinker, and adding small amounts of other materials.

Several types of Portland cement are available with the most common being called ordinary Portland cement (OPC) which is grey in color, but a white Portland cement is also available.

Q:How much cement is left in the U.S.?
Cement is not a raw material, it's something manufactured and there are huge amounts of the raw materials (clay, limestone) that go into it.
Q:We have an odd shaped living room and the way we have it arranged our couch is sitting in front of the woodstove. It has not been a problem since it has been warm out and we have not been using the stove, but now that fall weather is here we are getting to the point that we are going to have to use it. Our couch sits about 2 feet in front of the stove with the back of the couch facing the stove, its enough room for a person to walk between the couch and stove without touching the stove. I need to know if we can attach a piece of cement board that has ceramic tile on it to the back of our couch to make it safe from getting too hot and causing a fire. Thanks.
To answer your question, yes, it would be okay to install a cement particle board to the back of your sofa, to provide a barrier between the stove and the sofa. If you choose to go with this option, purchase the ones with higher fire resistance and install the wall backing from the bottom of the couch, to a height high enough to protect people's heads. But. if there is enough space, it would be better to move the couch further from the stove instead. In fact, if you can move some stuff around, it would be much better to shape your furniture like a U, with the open end facing the stove. Just as you would fix it around a fireplace. Because it isn't just the couch you need to protect, it is also the people sitting on it. Flying embers could scorch hair and clothing as well. And if you have small kids, regardless of what you tell them, they will once in a while forget and will pass through the space between the stove and the couch. With a U-shape, there is a better chance that they will pass between furniture, as opposed to between furniture and stove.
Q:make a backsplash i have some molds at 6''x6'' and i want to make a backsplash with cement in my kitchen will the cement tiles work if i seal them or can you tell me a site to look up so info.
I agree with Fraz. I would use sand mix.(just add water) Use thin-set to glue tiles to wall and I would also back butter each tile before placing them. Good Luck
Q:I'm a student, now studying about derivatives. In type of commodity options, why do we have wheat options, oil options, gold options... why don't we have cement options? And please let me know, is there any qualification, any criteria for choosing a goods to be an underlying asset of a derivative?
Well, first off we don't exactly have wheat options, oil options, and gold options. We have wheat, oil, and gold futures options (there probably exist options on these cash commodities but they aren't exchange traded and would generallynot be available to joe investor). If you are trading options on these commodities, upon exercise of the option you receive position in a futures contract not a position inn the commodity. That means your question is really, why aren't there cement futures contracts. The answer is: a) They have thought about them in some places at various times. A couple of years ago, they tried to get one going in India but some regulatory board nixed it for reasons unknown to me. b) Cement prices are relatively stable (and low). Cement sells for $100/ton (I think) and just doesn't vary much. c) Partly because of b) there is no need to hedge cement and a commodity with very stable prices would not entice many specuators. If the price of something is currently stable, introducing a futures contract and speculation to try to maake the commodity price unstable so people will hedge it and use futures contracts would be terribly abusive to the economy. d) Cement is usually a small component of the price of any project using large amounts of cement. The big expense is usually the construction expenses surrounding the cement and moving concrete. Thus, even if cement prices were variable, the variability would only contribute to variable costs of a project in a samll way and so probably not be worth hedging. e) If CBOT or CME thought it would be successful and they could get CFTC to go along with it they would offer cement futures in a Chicago second.
Q:Hi , I would like to know what type of temporary crown cement would burn the quot;lowerquot; tongue when in contact with ?I went to a dentist to do a dental crowning and the doctor use a type of cement that has burning sensation to my tongue . When I flip over my tongue I saw a painful red spot below my tongue.
Many temporary cements contain eugenol (clove oil) - which gives a tingling or slight burning sensation when in contact with skin. I have never seen it cause a burn mark though The most popular brand in the UK is Temp Bond
Q:I have got some chemistry prep and one of the question are ' How do u make cement ? ' Please could you help ! thanks :)

Q:I live in a bright purple cement rendered home and want to paint it dark grey, but am unsure what paint to use or if I have to do any preparation to it before painting itPlease helpBrands available in Australia will helpThanks
First, try using a power washer in the 2000 PSI range to take off the old paint. If it comes off (or most of it, anyway), let the cement dry for a couple days and then use a concrete primer before applying a color coat specifically made for concrete. The primer is especially acidic, so it really soaks into the cement (and it doesn't go very far, because so much soaks into the concrete). The concrete color coat is then designed to hold onto the primer and provide a solid moisture barrier. If the old color won't come off, don't worry. Just clean it up as best you can before applying the primer and paint. And, use top name brand paints (like Dunn-Edwards or Sherman Williams). The more expensive products will cover better and may actually be cheaper in the long run (less coats and time to paint).
Q:Front porch cement is all pited. I try some cement product they seam to flake off after a year or two. Or is there a newer cement product out now
You could get some of those plastic boards they make for decks and try to attach to your porch. I don't know if the additional thickness will cause you any problems. If you want to try a cement product, be sure to clean the old surface well and remove all the loose materials. If you are using a cement product that is trowelled in place, you should put an epoxy bonding agent down first, and your minimum thickness should probably be 1 (thicker will be better). Cure the concrete with wet rags for a couple of days for best strength with less surface cracking.
Q:I want to determine the percentage of Chloride present in any cement. Then can any one tell mePl., the standard method of determination of percentage of chloride in any type of cement.
figure out what the cement is made of in terms of chemical formula. use Cl5S2 as a rhetorical example *by the way, thats way off, divide the number of chlorine by the the total number of atoms in the formula. so in the example, its 5/ (5+2), which is about 0.714, so in the example there is 71.4% chlorine/ chloride
Q:I am wanting to add a cement patio on to my house and in order to build a $6000 patio, I have to pay a $5000 road bond to the village does that make sense
Is this 'bond' a form of insurance? It sounds as if the roads in your area are less than adequate to support heavy trucks and the village is trying to protect themselves from the expense of repairing the road. You don't say where in the world you are so this may loose something in the translation.
