Q:I just recently moved into a new house and the main room is laid out weird and the only place for the TV is above the fireplace. there are kits in the market today that can convert infrared signals into electrical signals then back to infrared where the av equipment is. this can be done wirelessly (RF) or wired. the kits are called infrared repeaters. they have many components. a sensor reads signal. a main control unit distributes signals(wirelessly to another control unit or wired to the flashers), then infrared flashers or emitters shoot the infrared beam at each component. click on the site below for more details. an alternative is to get a universal RF remote which doesnt require a line of sight to work. the remote sends signals to a contol unit where the signals are distributed to infrared flashers on the components to be controlled. this way, no wiring through the walls needs to be done. that can also be possible by using RF to transport signals from sensor to flasher (mentioned in above paragraph) if u prefer a cheaper infrared remote.
Q:I'm about to take an automotive electronics class at college but I'm just curious, what are the basics? Say I want to wire a police scanner or some type of lightbar into my car's electrical system. What would this entail? I'd have to pull away body panels, run wire, and hook it into the battery? Fuse blocks in cars often have SPARE (usually disused in some particular model) positions with wires already attached and within the wiring loom, with nothing connected to the end. Knowing what the intended accessory was, might allow you to connect something to its unconnected end, and always, the negative return is the car's frame. The circuit must be capable of carrying the current required. Some of these spares may be connected via the ignition switch, some may not. The next alternative is to run a new wire with a fuse inline, at the supply end at least. It is good practice to fuse the supply end, then have a further fuse at the accessory end (most accessories will already have this). The wire can often be run along and fixed to the existing car looms, passing through the firewall where the loom passes through. Again, negative is anywhere convenient on the car's metal frame. A quick and simple connection is the cigarette lighter, if fitted. Just procure a plug to replace the lighter. It can supply a fair current. So far as connecting a scanner to the existing speakers, I suggest you don't try to, unless the audio/ radio system has an accessory input. Maybe a bluetooth connection might be used, but really, the scanner's own speaker should supply the scanner sound. You can also connect accessories by splicing into existing car circuits, but I would suggest you do your college course first! You really need to understand current and wire sizes and fusing (not to mention basic circuitry!), before splicing into existing wires.

Ants have been a major factor in air conditioner failures. Service personnel in Texas have reported that fully one third of all summer repairs stem from ants shorting out terminal blocks. They also have been found to have set up housekeeping in televisions, well pump controls, telephone junction pedestals, airport runway lights, utility watthour meters, electrical plugs and lamp sockets, computers, and transformers-where they prefer to nest on the high-voltage side. Why are imported red fire ants attracted to electric fields? No one is yet ready to offer a theory. But biologist Dr. William P. MacKay of the University of Texas at El Paso and entomologist Professor S. Bradleigh Vinson of Texas AM have succeeded in eliminating a number of possible factors. They have found fire ant behavior does not correlate with a-c frequencies, or with the presence of ozone, electromagnetic or magnetic fields. Nor is the type of insulation used on wiring a factor. In tests up to 140V a-c and 350V d-c, both attracted almost the same number of ants at the same voltage and distance. However, they did find that when electricity was turned off, ants attracted to d-c power dispersed more rapidly than those who had been experiencing the nirvana of an a-c source. While the Texas researchers still don't understand the reasons why the ants have a fatal attraction to electric fields, they have been able to devise successful control techniques. Based on their studies, they recommend using terminal cap protectors to prevent bridging, and denying entrance to the insects by enclosing mechanical relays in metal or plastic cases and sealing them, as well as all entrances to padmounted equipment, with epoxy cement. Q:I just don't understand it, what does it mean when people say 3 phase or 2 phase Voltage, I know higher phases are used to power bigger more voltage demanding things but what does it mean?Can you get both AC and DC in each phase?Is phase just basically saying higher phase higher voltage for higher voltage equipment?How do you convert between phases?Are high phases created with the use of transformers or can they be created directly from things like wind turbines?What is the maximum and minimum phase?How does the phase effect the amps?
Let me explain briefly about the Electric power source and what it has. We get electric power source normally from power station where it is produced by means of Electric power generators. The generator has an Armature which comprises three windings (say coil). Each winding has two ends and all these ends are connected with each other. From Armature windings 'THREE LINES' are drawn to transmit the Electric power source. {Power station produces very high voltage (Electro Motive Force) and transmit the source through over head lines to the various step down Transformers where it is finally step-ed down to low voltages ranging from 600 to 220 volts and supplied to us.} As said above the 'THREE LINES' that Carry's the electric power source from the power stations to us are said as THREE PHASES. VOLTAGE is the unit of the 'Electro Motive Force' (EMF) which is supplied to us from power sub station. What is 220 and 120 volt ? Power substation Supply power source to us by means of 4 wires where the three wires which are called Phases as said above and the fourth wire is called as Neutral. The phase wires carries power source where as Neutral wire carries no power source. America and other countries which follows American Standard, use a phase wire and a neutral wire for 120 volt Supply especially for lighting loads and two wires of phases are used for 220 volt Supply for appliances etc., If you measure the voltage between phases it will read 220volt and phase to neutral it will read 120 volt.
