Q:i wen to advanced auto parts today because the check engine light on my 2002 nissan sentra has been on for a while, they did a check and told me that i had an evap leak and that i would have to take it to a mechanic so that he can run smoke through it and find out where the leak is. how much does this usually cost (i mean for them to use their machine to find the leak and then to fix it): I also have an EVAP leak. I was told it could be a variety of causes. 1. Loose gas cap- this is the cheapest fix and worth trying first. 2. EVAP Canister broke, hose cracked 3. Purge or vent solenoid defective 4. Vacuum leak at engine. I am interested in understanding the cost as well.

Q:Is it ok to wire a 12v bulb to a 14v power supply? will the extra 2 volts hurt the bulbs very much?: It's only about 15% over the bulb's rating. It will probably be extremely bright and will burn out sooner than otherwise. but should work OK.

My engine light came on and I took it to Auto Zone where they do the free engine light diagnosisand the results came out to be 4 possibilities:Car: 2000 Nissan Sentra GXEPossibility 1: Faulty fuel capPossibility 2: Purge system leakPossibility 3: Faulty canister vent control valvePossibility 4: Faulty purge control valveI‘d like to narrow this down to one possibility, and I‘m willing to take the car apart to check things out. Is there anything I can do or look for to tell which possibility is the true problem? Thanks: all you can do is visually check the EVAP lines for cracks, or check the fuel cap and make sure it's tight. you would need a scanner and a smoke tester to find a faulty part.

Q:I have a store bought diagnostic machine that the guys who work in the shop and sold it to me said it really does work, which I tend to believe since them saying so could result in them losing money. Anyhow, I have a small emissions system leak, did the gas cap, reset the light, it cam back on. So, I am calling around to see who can fix it for the least amount of money. My local dealership said they would have to still run a diagnostics test running me $100 more dollars even though i can tell them what the problem is. They said their diagnostic will tell them precisely where the leak is, which sounds a little fishy to me, i don‘t think that machine would tell them that, wouldn‘t it be a visual or some other type of inspection other than the diagnostic machine. also, regardless of the diagnostics, how much should this run me so i know who is trying to steal from me and who is being more honest? This is not covered under my extended warrenty.: This is a generally easy question to answer. The leak could be anywhere in your exhaust system. From the exhaust headers on the front/side of the engine, all the way back to the muffler. Generally, though, these leaks tend to be around the O2 (oxygen) sensors. Most cars have 2. Some could have 1-3 of them. Go to an exhaust specialist and ask them if they could help you find the leak. Otherwise, if it is not the exhaust, it could be a vacuum leak in the engine bay. Most engines now have rubber hoses that are all over the engine that allow air to be pulled through various areas of the engine. If you can do it yourself, check all the hoses and see if you can find one that is detached. A good source of reference would be a Hanes auto manual which you can pick up from Auto Zone. Q:A 2000 year model is serviced by two auto technicians. The abs warning light has been activated for the anti l?: abs system is the ani locking brakes. and if the tech's that worked on it did any wheel work to it and unplugged it it will go on.. my suggestion is to take it back to the person that worked on it and tell them that it wasn't on when you brought it is and make them fix it on their dime..

Look for one with at least 3 BMWs in the parking lot and maybe a VW, Audi, Benz. Then interview the owner or one of the lead mechanics. Interview the shop the same way you would interview a contractor for a room addition. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Edit: You may be due for a coolant flush and fill or some other regular scheduled maintenance that needs to be done at 75,000 miles. I think the i-6 has a timing CHAIN not belt. There are generally 3 types of BMW/Audi/Mercedes owners. Type 1) buys a new or certified used vehicle and understands that cost of maintenance on these $50-120,000 vehicles is going to be more than on a Ford Type 2) mechanically inclined or actual mechanic that can do a $3000 repair for the cost of parts Type 3) ostentatious prat that thinks he can buy a $50,000 car and treats it like a $6,000 Hyundai. Since these luxo-cars are capable of driving even when repairs are needed, this type of owner is usually driving on bad brakes, bad suspension, beyond service life on several components and thinks he looks good 'cuz it's a bimmer, bro'! If you are willing to admit that the cost of maintaining the vehicle is greater than you anticipated you are already moving into Type 1. Congratulations. Although these individual repairs and service needs are more costly, the life-time cost of owning a higher quality vehicle will be the same or less than that of a cheaper car. The difference is you need to budget for these repairs. That way when a $3000 service interval comes around it becomes an inconvenience not an emergency. I'm a Type 2.
