- there's some good solid info in your first answer. LP gas (propane) and natural gas (methane) both use the same commercial additive to give them their distinctive odor, called mercaptin. as stated in your first answer LP gas is heavier than air and will statify, or pool at the lowest level around the leak, while natural gas is lighter than air and will pool at the highest point around the leak. whether the leak is large or small does not matter, if it is in the explosive range it can explode at any time, all it needs is an ignition source. a spark from anything can set it off, or a pilot light on a water heater, stove, oven, or furnace. it is possible to have a small leak that builds up in an area off the house that is not ventillated well and seldom used i'm sure you meant to ask if carbon monoxide detectors will detect gas leaks, they will not. the upper and lower explosive levels talked about in the first answer are both very dangerous. if the leak is above the upper explosive level, the concentration of gas in a house will drop into the explosive range very shortly after a door or window is opened and outside air is allowed into the house. the most evident sign of a gas leak is the smell of the odorant, some people say it smells like garlic, some people say it smells like a dead mouse, either way it really stinks. if you're around the smell for a long period of time you will become desensitized to it, meaning you'll get used to the smell and won't smell it anymore. if you use propane and your tank is running low you'll get a strong odor, that's because mercaptin is heavier than liquid propane and the solids of the mrecaptin pool at the bottom of the tank. if you smell gas, get out of the house immediately and call the gas company, they have very sensitive equipment that can detect the smallest gas leak. - I would get a basic light fitting and then decide how much light I need. You get more light from higher wattage bulbs. If you want to add colour then I suggest not to use a too powerful globe because it will melt the film. To change colour you can have three different lenses that you can rotate with a small motor. To focus the beam you can use high gloss sheets that they use in sky lights. I would find an electrical wholesaler for the lights, build the boxes out of ply wood and then get the reflective material to focus the beam from the sky light people. Then you can stain glass for the colour or use colour film. Then you can make up a disk and fit the colour lenses in and then use a motor to rotate the as you hold it in with pulley system. You get some low cost DC motors out there and you can make a cheap ac/dc converter or just use a car battery. Otherwise use two drills and then run them with a car battery to turn the lights. then you just clamp them down and put the disk in the chuck of the drill. A hand drill works fine off a battery by the way as it is a universal motor. If you want to dim and light up the lights speak to the electrical wholesaler, they can hook you up with a potentiometer or a dimmer. Also remember to push down the prices, otherwise they will rip you off. Also remember a good chorus makes good hardcore bands these days.
