- Q:How much does it cost to have either the thermostat or water pump fixed on a car?
- thermostat... is only a few bucks... water pump.. about 60 and up.........
- Q:My water pump keeps getting quite hot after each use. Everything seems to be working properly, except I think that the heat may cause it to burn out and that would cause a huge problem. My pump pulls water from a ground level water tank and pushes water up three flats to the part of my house used for living quarters. The pressure setting is set to cut out at 40psi and cut in at 25psi. What can I do myself before calling in expensive experts?
- might be bearings in the motor or could need a good cleaning and reapcking with heavy lithium grease or maybe get some kind of colloing fan or raditor system to keep it cool !

- If you can narrow down the location to being from the actual water pump and not a line, It would be the seal in the water pump. The only option is to replace the water pump.

- water pumps can leak at different times, i had one that would not leak hot, while running, under pressure, but once it was completely cold it would start to drip, look for a small weep hole , there's a good chance this is wear it is leaking
- Q:1997 Chevy Cavalier, 2.2 engine. In the past 2 days I noticed that my temp gauge was reading a little higher than usual but not in the danger range. I checked and nedded to add coolant. Last night it started making a chattering or maybe klunking sound. As far as I could tell it was coming from the water pump but it stopped before I could get out of the car and look to see. Now the coolant is low again. Are these signs of the water pump being bad or could it be something else?
- If you don't see drip marks under your car when you come out in the morning or when it's parked, it's probably not the water pump. Either way, that coolant is going someplace. Might it be possible that you had the AC on when you heard the clunking sounds? When you have the AC on and the AC compressor comes on it puts an extra drain on the engine and makes a noticable change in the way the engine sounds. What I would do is find a way to get under the car with a flashlight and take a look around and see if anything is wet. I had a 1999 Chevy Tahoe and had all these same sort of things you are describing, so I climbed up under it and looked around and saw a drip around one of the seals on the water pump. For about three weeks I kept my eye on it and noticed the drip marks under my car. Eventually one day on a quick trip to the corner store, the pump finally went and and deluge of coolant came pouring out the bottom of my car. It could also just be a loose hose or a blown headgasket. Check your oil and see if you have any coolant in the oil (you'll be able to tell). If you do, take it to a garage ASAP or you'll be really screwed! Either way, if it's the pump you'll know it sooner or later when it blows out!

- Q:Would I notice a difference in driving if I changed my timing belt and water pump?
- Question is vague. Timing belt makes sure your valves are open or closed when your pistons are up or down. If your timing is off because your belt jumped you may have anything from a slight miss, higher temps, to bent valves and need a new motor. (you would know) Water pump is probably driven by your timing belt, and keeps coolant circulating through your engine block to keep your motor cool. A bad water-pump may leak, or be so worn that it no longer pumps enough coolant to keep the motor cool. Unless your vehicle is overheating, or you are leaking coolant you probably do not need to replace the water pump. The exception is that if it is a long and expensive job to replace and you are already torn down to your water pump, then people usually opt to get it done to save themselves money down the road. Timing belts in interference engines (motors where the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different times) should be changed as recommended by the manufacturer. If you fail to do this and one breaks or jumps enough you will be spending thousands. Hope this helps.

- When you mean it wont come loose, do you mean you cant break the bolts loose or is the pump stuck on the motor like glue? If the bolts are stuck, try spray them with penetrating oil and let it work in for about 30 mins. If the pump is stuck, use a narrow putty knif, gently tap in between the pump and the block, and pry it off, then clean the mating surface completely to ensure the new pump seals properly.

- Some water pumps have weeping holes, if water is coming out of those then it is definitely your problem.
