I'm trying to hang something heavy from my ceiling and I can't find a joist through the drywall. I've tried using a studfinder, and I can't really get into the attic area because it's insulated with loose fiberglass. Can anyone help?
We re trying to install a ceiling mounted storage unit into our condo s garage and could also not find the ceiling joists. We called out builder and he said since it s a condo with living space above the garage there are three layers of Sheetrock for fire proofing, so we would need to use 3 nails and hit them up into the ceiling until we find a joist. A stud finder will not work in this instance. Suffice it to say we gave up on that project. :-(
If you were a single woman with no man around, how would you fix a hole in the ceiling from water damage? And the roof? On a budget. Is this possible for a small woman to do this job by herself? Can someone give me step by step instructions? Photo of the damage attatched.
I would repair it. It is not terribly difficult or costly - but your circumstance is complicated by the texture on the ceiling. You would need to purchase some lightweight joint compound, some fiberglass reinforcing mesh or tape, a couple of inexpensive plastic spackling knives (and you will need either a step-ladder or some other stable platform to work from. You will clean out the damaged area and remove all loose materials. Then use a knife to spread some joint compound in the hole, not too much but enough to cover everything with a thin coat. Spread the reinforcing material over this and add a small amount more compound. Smooth this as best you can with a knife. Allow to cure overnight. Repeat with thin coats of compound only until smooth. Sand lightly to remove tool marks. Now you have as smooth area in a textured area. There are texture-sprays-in-a-can that you can try, or you can just leave it smooth, Paint. Done. It takes some time, and you will learn as you go - so don't expect perfection right away. Good luck with it.
Is it fiberglass, it looks like foam?
Yes the business owner is absolutely right. It is fiberglass. That is added as a safety feature. It keeps the risk of fire away. Don't remove it!
We just bought a house and our ceiling has the cottage cheese texture to it and it is cracked and broken in many placed so my husband wants to just take it off. I have told him that it may contain asbestos but he thinks he can do it on his own. So we are going to get it tested and if it does he just wants to remove it himself. My question is, is this a job anyone can do?
As sparkles said asbestos is a hazardous materials.. wow if hubby wants to do it himself best of british luck. To start with he is going to need complete head mask and breathing gear filters and full overalls ,, no part of body to be exposed, the material has to be dampered as its pulled out and completely wrapped in plastic and taped up and buried with minimum cover of 6ft. Wash all clothes and then burn 'em You think I joke!! I kid you not.. asbestous dust can linger and if breathed in collects on the lungs then BINGO ..Asbestosis CANCER WITH A BIGGG C. Take it from someone who has it & i guarantee u dont want it.. So sit down with a glass of wine or beer , think about it and get the experts in you only have one life and the experts have the liscence to do it & get rid of it. Take the old man for a second honeymoon and leave it to them..... that's the best advice you can get for free. ciao.. but the fine if you get caught in Aussie land would NOTcompensate for the experts...
What is the specific waterproofing of the bathroom? How much is the height of the wall As well as craftsmanship?
Polyurethane waterproof coating general approach is as follows: 1, the ground to the direction of the ground to find slope, cement mortar or bean concrete can be, but the surface to be flat. Near the door slope is small, the gap near the slope, according to the specific situation to master. 2, the pipeline to wear the floor of the root, to strengthen the waterproof. Tube root construction seal seal, cement smoothing foot protection, brush waterproof coating when the paste from the wire to strengthen the layer 1 to 2 layers. The same measures around the floor drain. 3, the wall to deal with clean plain light without floating ash, small particles, wall ground junction to wipe the original angle or slope angle. Brush waterproof coating when the glass cloth to strengthen the layer 1 to 2 layers. 4, the total thickness of polyurethane waterproof coating requires more than 1.5 mm. Can not rely on the number of decisions. Root, corner reinforcement layer at the first brush, room temperature 4h dry, and then a large area of ??brushing, Tu scraping. There is no leakage scraping, bubbling phenomenon. Large area brushing 24h curing after brushing the next layer. 5, first brushing the facade after brushing the plane, the next brushing direction and the vertical again. The last time the film semi-curing, throwing coarse sand particles, easy to combine with the cement mortar in the future. 6, the ground waterproof layer should be painted out of the bathroom door outside the 300 wide. Waterproof surface waterproof layer should be higher than the ground 200, a shower bathroom wall waterproof layer should be higher than the ground 1800 (L8 recommended full wall waterproof).
Not sure how to spell something that sounds like "ah-spec-tice" please tell me where I can get into on aspectice.
I know this was posted awhile ago, but I thought this info I got from an expert may be helpful. If your house is built before 1978 it may have asbestos. To remove popcorn ceilings before this date the cheap way is to layer plastic everywhere in the area of the popcorn ceiling use a spray bottle or mister keeping it wet then scrape it off. When finished gather the plastic up keeping the popcorn ceiling remains encased in the plastic put it in a large garbage bag, seal up, and toss it. The key is to keep it wet when removing. For extra precaution wear safety glasses and mask. As long as it's wet it can't be inhaled and that's when it's dangerous. If you think it may be in the walls it's a good idea to get your home tested for the professionals to come in to clean it but it will cost you a lot of money.
