Q:I know what they do and how they work, but at this point they're expensive, don't always produce enough electricity as needed, and can't be used when there's no sun, as in half the day. Wouldn't wind power seem so more efficient? Or if they do use solar panels, how about putting them in the desert. But I really believe that research money should go to fusion generators since that's the future and the answer to our problems. Which is best in your opinion?
It absolutly depends on where you live. I don't have enough wind in my area for a wind turbine to do any good. I just installed solar, the system will pay for itself in about 6 years. I didn't get a system that will zero out my electcity usage, but it will dramatically be decreased. I can always add to it in a few years. Since I plan on living here forever I will see a great financial benift.
Q:I recently got into solar panels, I have little background in electronics but I have done a little electrical work in the past and just want to make a small 36 cell panel to power a 2v battery that would run my a small tv (9 inch) and PS3 for a few hours every night. I have been looking up on how to do it before I get in over my head and I have a few questions.... After you solder all of the cells together then what? Do you hook all of the rows of cells together somehow? Can you connect them straight to a battery? After you hook to the battery do you hook up a power inverter to get the 2 AC plugs that would be needed? Thanks in advance for any help....
You will have to wire them in such a way that provides the battery with the optimal voltage for it to charge, which on a car 2v battery is around 4v. You said you have some background in electronics so this shouldnt be too difficult. You can connect them straight to the battery yes. Like you said, I believe a power inverter from 2VDC to 0VAC would work just fine. PS3 pulls a lot lot lot of current though so it probably wouldnt last too long. Look up the specs for PS3 and see how many amps it is pulling and purchase your inverter based off of that. I remember trying to run an xbox in my car one time and the inverter I had didnt work because of that. Be careful working with batteries, I had one explode in my face about a month ago.. scariest moment of my life! Good luck!
Q:right now, you would need a suitable number of solar panels just to power house that can take up a lot of real estate. so my question is, is it feasible to create something that absorbs more of the suns energy like a magnet it would suck it up. the point of doing this would be so that we wouldnt need so much space so many panels just to power home for example.i hope thats coherent.
we are near the edge of what is physically possible for solar power. You only get so many photons per area you know...and much of this is lost in entropy. Solar panels today are over 80% as efficient as what could ever be theoretically possible. No you will never get an easy solution to the land problem. lol what invisible talker suggests about using a black hole i suppose could be a way to increase the photons per area...but you would get much mroe power by using the tidal forces produced by a black hole than solar power heh...not to mention your panels will get sucked in...and whatever energy they produce wont be able to escape the black hole and power anything outside.
Q:How much space is required for installing solar panels?
The amount of space required for installing solar panels varies depending on the size and type of the panels. On average, a residential solar panel system typically requires around 100-400 square feet of roof space per kilowatt of installed capacity.
Q:Me and my wife just saw an ad on TV about going solar and saw the money we can save every month... any here have solar panels? How much do you save every month on energy bill? Is it true that your energy meter will spin backwards? lol
Yes, it can save money, but really depends on your individual situation. There are three main factors - how much sun you get, how much electricity you use, and how much electricity costs locally. We have solar, and the meter does spin backwards. Actually, it's a digital meter, so it counts down instead of up. The system covers essentially all our electrical usage over the year, and our electric bill is about $5 a month, because of minimum charges by the electric company. That shouldn't be used as a comparison to your situation, though, since every house is different.
Q:I would like to connect a solar panel to a small fan. I am not sure as to what is needed to actually quot;connectthe two together. Any help is appreciated.
Panels are rated nominally, and you can look at your fan to see what the ratings for the fam are to determine sizing of the panel. Current multiplied by the volts (rated) gives you the wattage of the motor- just use this as a guide for sizing the panel. You do want a little more power from the panel than the motor draws for purposes of starting the motor and for having the fan operate at lower sun angles as well. You can add a battery if you chose, but it is not a requirement. Just treat the leads of the panel like those of a battery red (+) and black (-) just connect those to the fan, if you match color for color, no problem. If the markings are not present and no wires are on the fan, try it one way, if it is the wrong way- reverse them. AC operated fans will require an inverter to convert the DC to AC. These draw a certain amount of power as well. In general the same rules of thumb apply. It is just easier though to stick with a DC motor.
Q:Can solar panels be used in cloudy regions?
Yes, solar panels can still be used in cloudy regions. While solar panels are more efficient in direct sunlight, they can still generate electricity in cloudy conditions. Clouds diffuse sunlight, but some sunlight still reaches the solar panels, allowing them to produce power. However, the energy output may be lower compared to sunny regions.
Q:What are the maintenance requirements for solar panels?
The maintenance requirements for solar panels include occasional cleaning to remove dirt and debris, checking for any damage or loose connections, and ensuring that the panels are receiving sufficient sunlight. Additionally, regular monitoring of the system's performance and scheduling professional inspections can help identify and address any potential issues.
Q:I live in Hawaii and having a solar panel is not a bad idea since we have plenty of sun the only problem is that it cost a lot of money and takes many years before you get your money back. There are kits available where you can make and install your own solar panel and wind turbine but is it bull **** or is it a good deal?
In my opinion, it is a losing equation. They will wear out and go bad long before you break even with your investment. The technology isn't there yet for the average homeowner. Save energy costs using other methods.
Q:I want to know that if I put solar panels in space if Pluto can recieve energy for iPods and television
Two problems: ) solar flux. Around Earth, we receive solar energy to the tune of 370 W/m^2 (watts per square metre). In theory, if you have a solar panel of metre by one metre and place it (in space) directly perpendicular to the rays of the sun (meaning = the panel is facing the sun perfectly), you should get 370 watts of power. In practice, the panels are never 00% efficient so that you get less. The flux (just like the intensity of light) drops as the square of the distance increases. Pluto is -- on average -- 39 times further from the Sun, therefore the flux there will be reduced by a fraction of 39^2 = 52 times 370 / 57 = 0.9 W Even with 00% efficiency, you square metre panel will produce less than one watt, once you get it out to Pluto. 2) temperature It is very difficult to built a solar panel (with all the required wire connections) that remains flexible enough at Pluto's temperatures. Temperature drops as the 4th root of the flux (or, to make it easier, the square root of the distance). sqrt(39) = 6.25 Temperature at Pluto = Temperature at Earth / 6.25 (in degrees Kelvin -- also known as Absolute Temperature) At best, temperature around here is 300 K (it is less than that, but 300 makes the calculation easier) 300 / 6.25 = 48 48 K = -225 C = -373 F wires and insulation become very brittle at these temperatures... and one watt of power flowing through the wires will NEVER be enough to warm them up (never mind running the iPod).
