- On a wood floor use the backer board, on concrete use a leveling compound unless a 1/2 notched trowel can fill the gap with your thinset.

- I used to charge 2.50$ a s/f to install board or prep an area. That would include the board , thin set and nails ( or screws)to do it properly. 4x8 cement board is hard to find and heavier the all HE!!, so hire a friend. 3x5 sheets are much easier to handle by yourself. - Q:What are the risks if we do not install cement board first, if any?
- Not putting an additional subflooring is almost a guaranteed failure. ATC and TCA are tile code guide lines that state that a minimum of 1 1/4 subflooring is needed to do tile. There are other circumstances ( like deflection) that come into play , but properly prepped subflooring is the best bet against failure. It doesnt need to be a cement board ( and there is a proper installation method) .There are other ways , depending or your exact situation that can be used to properly do tile. - Haven't experienced it but from what I read in your link, it gets hung/nailed like drywall and underlayment. If you're not familiar with how to hang drywall, the first link is a very informative step by step video. Second link, though not a video is how to install cement board/fiber underlayment.
