Q:This building was previously a school building, with cement block walls..I need to know if I need backer board, or do I just need to fill in the low spots to make the wall flat and level? Also, what kind of thinset do I need for clear glass mosaics?
whats your intention? just a decorative backsplash and/or accent? as long as the masonry is in sound condition (i.e: joints are solid and there isn't any efflorescence, or deterioration of the block face), and take proper steps to clean the substrate thoroughly (remove any oil/paint). if you had the intentions of making a shower enclosure, i would recommend making further preparations. depending on your choice of tile colour (light vs. dark), i would select the co-ordinating thin-set pigment, and possibly a scratch coat if choosing a lighter colour. when applying the thin-set with your trowel, avoid using the notched edge. otherwise, its possible that you may be able to see the notching through the glass tiles.
Q:I used a razor but it killed the blade in about two seconds. Is there a special saw for this stuff that won't make a huge mess?
There is no easy way to cut cement board. It's just messy, I just bite the bullet and cut it with a masonary blade in a skill saw (I use my near death saws for that kind of work) that concrete dust is bad (were a mask). If your duing long rips, have a helper with a vaccum or compressor, suck or blow a clear line of site. That suck or blow comment will raise eyebrows. just leave it alone.
Q:Fiber reinforced silicate board which is good
Pummelian fiber reinforced silicate fire board by the selected quartz powder, mica, perlite and high quality plant fiber and a variety of mineral fibers and then supplemented by cement and add special fire materials, high temperature, high pressure steaming, High stability known to Tobima to stone crystal structure-based high-tech green energy-saving light construction fire board.
Q:I have 3/4 hardwood in the living and dining rooms and was wanting to avoid any step transitions. Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated.
I do a lot of tile work.... If using 1/4 cement board, just make sure you have a sturdy, level surface underneath. The trick here is to make sure that you use plenty of nails to put is down. Follow the pattern on the cement board. You will not have any issues because of the thickness of the cement board.... and your transition will go a lot easier.
Q:installed the most powerful exhaust fan that is made and my newly painted hardi backer walls are sweating when take a shower or bath with the fan running- what can I do?
is it the outside wall.it may need to be insulated.
Q:Package toilet water pipes, do not want to use red brick (too heavy), want to use lightweight materials, but also want to paste the tiles. Can you elaborate?
You can use steel keel hanging steel mesh, above the direct wet cement mortar can be posted tiles.
Q:What are the differences between the gypsum board and the cement pressure plate and the Eide board?
Ette board is a fiber reinforced silicate plate (fiber cement board), the main raw material is cement, selected minerals, by the high temperature autoclaved autoclaved, waterproof performance, can be used as toilet Wall, or outdoor roof roof, or external wall with the board can be in the long-term damp environment to maintain stable performance unchanged.
Q:Cement fiber pressure plate, fiber cement pressure plate (FC board), cement asbestos board, mineral wool decorative plate. Are these all the same? Where are they used?
(Fiber cement pressure board, fiber reinforced cement board, fiber cement board) is a high-quality wood pulp and cement as raw material, by the pulp, forming, cutting, pressing, steaming made of a new building materials, with light, High strength, fireproof, waterproof, anti-corrosion, large format, good processing, etc., are widely used in buildings: inside and outside the wall, ceiling, curtain wall lining, steel floor, decorative wall panels, clear cement decoration and other parts The
Q:We have drywall in our kitchen that was painted with a smooth semi-gloss paint a good 8 yrs ago. We'd like to install 3x6 tumbled marble as a backsplash over the drywall. It's about 1/4 thick so probably slightly heavier than say, the tiny square glass tiles that come on a 12x12 netting. One person at the Home Depot said we could just sand and scrape up the drywall and then apply the thinset and install the marble. Another said we might want to use a cement backing. We aren't really DIYers and would so we don't want to create extra work with the cement backing if it isn't needed. That said, we don't want the drywall to start peeling and the marble tiles to start falling off after a short amount of time. Please advise. Thank you!
ild install a 1/4' hardyboard board first -the thinset will not last sticking the tiles to the paint
Q:What to use to fill gap between green wall board and cement board, and between cement boards around bath tub?
Use the same material you are going to use to set the tile. Thin set or mastic. They are both water proof when cured. You can pre fill the joints and then come behind to set tile. We would use use fiberglass tape made for drywall and cover that with thin set mortar. Make sure you don't set the green board all the way down on the tub. Leave it up about 1/2 or so and fill with the mastic or thin set so no water can ever wick up into the drywall if grout or caulk fails.
