- Q:I gutted the room and now would like to rebuild. One side of the room slants (it's the roof) and the other side of the room is a dormer (all low ceilings).I want to insulate the ceiling but have no ridge vents so no moving air as someone mentioned I should have. I want to install foam channels to keep the insulation away from the roof but not sure if this is a good idea without the ridge vents. I will have a vent to the outside installed on the very top of the roof however and the small attic space is open all the way through the other two upstairs rooms and I will add another roof vent on that end of the house. I will only be able to install 3 inch insulation but that's better than none at all. I live in the northeast and was told if the job isn't done right I can get ice jams in winter. Also I don't see any way to drill ridge vents. would it be ok to just install the styrofoam channels and insulate then sheet rock or am I asking for trouble? Thanks in advance for any help.
- Suggestion: install the insulation with the foam channels but leave the center section (roof ridge area) open from end to end. At each end you can install a static vent or an active one. Depending on the amount of space you have you may be able to install a power vent.If you can send me a diagram with measurements I can give you a more definitive answer.
- Q:on a traditional pitched roof construction, where is heat insulation usually provided?
- The insulation is always placed in the rafters, leaving the rest of the attic space ventilated. That's why it's so important to cover every opening with screen to keep birds and animals out.
- Q:Tax Question: Itemized receipt for roofing and insulation?
- I choose the best answer based on the fact that he was correct. Our installation of the roof tiles was not a tax deductible item, but the extra insulation they installed was tax deductible, giving us an over extra $350 in return. We were just going to forget it, but it was actually worth it!
- Q:im thinking of putting rolled felt paper under my metal roofing would that work instead of the reflective insulation instead?
- I installed a metal roof 5 years ago. I stripped the roof down to the plywood and put down 30# felt. This was what the manufacturer recommended. The felt is not for insulation though. The company was Metal Sales out of PA. They are glad to give advise.
- Q:I already have fiberglass in the attic, but would like to add more.
- Your best angle is to go with blow in fiberglass. ownes corning and Johns mansville both make good blow in fiberglass. Menards and Home depot in our area will lend you a blow in machine for free but make sure you have 2 people to run it and that you have a TIGHT sealed face mask for the guy in the attic along with safety goggles. No way around it either that guy in the attic is gonna get itchy, so expect that now. I put blow in cellulose over my attic fiberglass bats to bring it up to R-50 but i regret it now. I should have stuck with fiberglass. I did some research after the fact and there is some flammability issues with the cellulose i used and on top of that it is seriously dusty so i cant store anything in the attic space anymore. Cellulose was cheaper and the "green" choice but if i could reverse time I would have gone fiberglass blow in.
- Q:I work with rubber roofing insulation. How , other than long sleeves, do I deal with the after effects of being exposed to this insulation.
- Before working rub talcum powder over skin This keeps the insulation from getting into the skin acts like a barrier.. Then when you get home rinse with cold water when rinsed take as hot a you can stand it shower this opens your pores allowing the insulation to come out then afterward rub baby oil over skin to help with irritation. A benydril allergy pill helps with the itch as well.
- Q:we want to put a model railway up in the loft, and i like the idea of having white plastic cladding throughout up there,my hubby is insulating the roof tomorrow, but he prefers plasterboard,at least the cladding will be maintenance free,
- i think it might be able to pass code if you ever sell the house.i myself would use sheets of white wainscoting.also make sure the insulation if it has a paper backing ,paper faces the room.
- Q:A roofer who wants to put a new roof on my mobile home says it will dry out. (We live in the rainiest part of the US)
- sound like the roofer wants to RIP you off, you Mop or spread a coating not put shingles on it,[A Trailer,] you don,t mess with the insulation, its under the roof. tell him to hit the road he is setting you up for a big mess,
- Q:As opposed to other roof structures, such as Mansard or Hipped roofs. If so, is it because there is a lesser distance between the internal heat source and the roof?
- No, it really does not matter what type of roof as long as the insulation is well done. But of course in a flat roof it is easier to reach all the points with ease whereas in sloping roof some areas may be inaccessible. But, with blow-in insulation that is not a big problem.
- Q:weather stripping/ foam strip?
- Those foam strips they sell you to go under the ridge caps will eventually dry out, blow out, and be hanging all over the place. Caulking won't fill a 5/8's gap to keep the wind/rain out, and tar has no place whatsoever on a metal roof, you'll get it all over everything, and either one will look like ****. The best ridge cap has to be custom made and cut to fit. I use a 12" wide X 10' strip, bent in half to pitch, and then turn down 90 degrees on the edges, whatever the rib height is, usually 5/8". Hold the ridge cap in place on the ridge and mark where the ribs are, then notch out for the ribs so that the cap sits flush over the ribs and down on the flats, punch holes and screw down thru the tops of the ribs. It's a little time consuming but it makes for a good looking finished product that won't wear out.
