- Q:4' x 2' acoustical ceiling tiles, separated by 1 1/2 metal strips. Every few feet, a 2' x 4' florescent lighting fixture.I'm an artist and have paintings on every spare inch of wall space..including the back of the door. Out of space to hang canvas and paint.Am considering hanging framed canvas from the metal strips on the ceiling.Does anyone know how much weight the drop, acoustical ceiling dividers can take..without crashing to the floor..taking the florescent lighting fixture(s) with it?..give or take..?
- The ceiling grid is usually suspended on 9 or 12 Ga iron wire. It is typical about every 4 feet along the grid spaced 2 feet at the light fixture corners and then about every 6 feet. If you need to suspend any weight more than about 10 pounds I suggest you install some support wires dedicated to the paintings that penetrate the ceiling grid where you need them. Much safer than using the grid and less likely to let the painting come loose and hit the floor.
- Q:what should I charge to install 1500 sq feet of drop ceiling
- Depends on a lot of things, such as Ceiling height above. You must attach hanging wires to the structure above, so if you have to go up to 12' to attach the wires - it takes more time. And if the existing ceiling is really close 2-4 or less - it makes it harder to install the ceiling tiles,lights,etc. Grid pattern - 2'x4' is the normal grid pattern, but if it is 2'x2' pattern, that takes longer. The type of tile also matters. If it is regular flat panel type ceiling tile with no revealed edge - the tiles drop in quickly and the border tiles cut easily. If it is revealed edge tile that has a decorative edge that sticks down below the gridwork - this takes time to cut and fit, as it must be a really close fit to look right. A professional charges about $.90 per square foot for 2'x4' grid pattern with flat regular tile. For 2'x2' grid pattern-add $.20 per sq. foot. For revealed edge tile add $.30 per sq. foot. Obviously people who do this on the side and are not professionals will do it for a lot less.
- Q:I have a manufactured home and trying to finish the basement. I am stuck on how to install a ceiling being there are steel beams instead of wood therefor nothing to attach a grid to. Any ideas or anybody ever done this before?

- Q:We have a drop ceiling but rather large holes for the many light fixtures (at least 20, like a grid of light bulbs as decoration) in our basement. The holes are about 2 inches in diameter and the light bulb doesn't fill up the holes completely. Is it safe to live down here without removing the insulation?
- It's not clear from your description if you have recessed lights or not. Recessed lights can have an IC rating meaning you can put insulation right next to or over the recessed lights (IC stands for insulation contact). If the recessed lights aren't IC rated, then you have to leave a gap of 3 between the fixture and the insulation. Regardless of the above, you can always switch to compact fluorescent or LED bulbs which will generate far less heat for a given amount of light.
- Q:In carpentry and drywall when they refer to Black Iron on hanging ceilings what do they mean?
- I'll bet Ceiling Grid refers to modern suspended tile ceilings not to fire resistant lathe and plaster, request a variance for aesthetic value of the reconstruction, and make a point to raise the conduit above the lath surface, it will be better protected than a wall installation and all you have to repair is a few access holes here and there. say every four feet depending on the space you have to run your conduit, and get you installers certified in the abatement process, more engineering BS!
- Q:I hate yellow bulb lights . I like those whitey white white rows of Long rectangular lights that they have at work place/ office etc on the ceiling. I want to install one at home as I find them less depressing and Also I can see better and don't get headache in those lights.What are those lights called? Where to buy?how to install in the house?
- OMG you like those?! their called flourescent lights and you can get them anywhere but lowes or home depot would be best. their easy enough to install but you would probably need a surface mount one which would look hideous. most offices have drop ceilings so the lights just drop into the grid but at your house since you probably have drywall you would have to screw a surface mount fixture right to the drywall.

- The material is about 40 square, artificial about 25 a square
