steve, when solvent cementing pvc ( sch 40 ) all you need is deburr the edge of the pipes, use a good quality primer ( generally purple ) and a good quality glue. apply both to pipe and fittings and press in, hold for about 30 seconds and done - since your dealing with pressure, you must use pressure sch 40 fittings , not dwv pvc drain fittings you must let the fittings set or dry for at least 4 to 6 hrs before turning thw water back on. if you do this, there should be no reasons for a leak, best luck

Did you clean the pipe and the fitting with a wire brush? did you put flux on both after cleaning it? if so you have to heat them both up with a torch until they are really hot. the solder will not take if they are not hot enough.. flux is very important also try that then leave the torch on the joint you want to solder for a bit longer then try again, if it is still happening, keep heating it and try again. evenually you will get it.. I use mapp gas, but propane works also for your torch mapp gas burns hotter and heats them up faster. oh. are these new pipe and fittings? if so try above, if they are old, you have to make sure ALL of the water is out of the lines, or it will take you a VERY VERY long time to heat them up enough to solder, because the water cools the joint and the pipe, it has to turn the water into steam then the pipe will eventually heat up

Its not easily done. The fittings allow a lap joint which is then soldered making a very strong and robust joint. What you are proposing would create a butt joint and they are very weak. There are some types of rubber boots that might allow this to be done but I've not seen anything exactly like what you are requesting.

The big one that has a funny bend? It is the P-trap and it usually connects together with adjustable compression fittings. Easiest solution is to take the parts down to your local hardware where they will likely be more than happy to ensure you get the correct sizes and material.
