Hydro electric is cheaper, cleaner and most cost effective. There is no operational loss because the fuel (flowing water) is free
Q:I was offered a job in the same general posistion for a YOUNG company that has offered me 15.00 more a hour, lead position, training in a differnt brand of the same product I work on and, basicly the freedom to choose my own hours (avg. 40-55 hrs). Or do I stay where I am at were I have some stabability, lead position, unstable hours (avg. 40-65 hrs plus nights away from home/family), possabilities of advancment and, a since of loyalty to bosses. Note: I worked hard to get where I am at, however, my current knowledge is the bases for new job. WHAT DO I DO????????????
Get yourself a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. Write on the top of each side current job or possible job and then list the benefits and drawbacks about each position so you know exactly what you think of each. Take this information and speak with someone you trust who doesn't have a direct role in this decision - a parent, brother, sister, or friend. Your spouse/significant other should be consulted about this decision, but sometimes it also helps to speak with someone who isn't directly impacted by your decision. If money is the deciding factor, go with the new position. It also sounds as if you can make more money working less hours and have more time with your family. How are the benefits at each company? If the cost of health care is more at the new company versus the old one or is not as good of coverage you might consider staying if healthcare coverage is a major factor for you. Let's face it, in this day and age no job is stable and guaranteed, even if you own your own company.

So you people don't really read any of these postings do you? How many times do we have to answer the same questions? Bio diesel is not the way to replace fuel oil (diesel). There is not enough acreage in the USA to grow the amount of crops, any crops, to make bio fuels to power the existing fleet of vehicles much less the future fleet. And carrying water on locomotives is very inefficient. Steam Engines (Sterling Engines) are a very efficient means of moving huge vehicles. That is why they use nuclear/steam to power air craft carriers but hauling water to make steam cuts the payload so much that it becomes unprofitable. Why would we want to go back in time and technology? We can go to plug in electric powered vehicles that are charged by photovoltaic panels at your home or work. And, naysayers pay attention to this, Linear Electric Drive would power long distance and heavy hauling.

Q:i could only find a weight on one website and it said around 8,000 lbs. This one is rusted out and were planning on taking it in for scrap normally we would cut it up and take it in but this thing is a monster im thinking about renting a flatbed if it is 8,000 it would be worth it. The cooling coil and somekind of box with all the controls has been removed but they probobly werent any more then 500 lbs
That weight should be very close minus loss to rust. I would call a scrapyard first to get an idea of what they are paying, especially because part of it is a diesel engine and there are guidelines with some yards how they will accept machinery, such as clear of any fluids. The copper or aluminum wires and generator cores will probably be most valuable parts and might be worth removing and forgetting the rest depending on what the scrap yard says about the engine and rusted steel shell is worth. It will be a hard move, even for a flatbed truck because the little winch will have to pull that generator which is super heavy and dead weight. Final thing to look into is whether there is any value in any part of it. This is a very popular size generator and is still produced today except with Cummins diesel engine, maybe someone has an older one with same engine and their block is cracked!?
Q:I have two deisel engines and two tank feeds, how can I connect the genset (4KVA) . I am conerned when the engines are idling or even running they will start the genset. I do not want to put an extra tank.Thank you
If your tank has another port on it for a fuel line that is where you hook up. If not go to the supply line at the tank and put in a T fitting and then a shut off valve for each engine. Run the supply line to the generator from that T. You will also need a return line from the generator that you can T into at the return line from the engine at the tank. Many people that convert from gas to diesels run into these same problems. Often a fitting is made up that is put in the fuel fill line to allow for the return line. The generator supply and return lines will be smaller then the engine fuel lines. Running the engines will not cause the generator to start.
Q:I recently seperated the generator from the engine and replaced the rear main oil seal on the engine the electric generator was only moved back about 16-18 inches to access rear main seal. job went well with no problems after completeing job I turned down rpms to about 1000 rpm It was put back in service They use it to power up refer containers from the harbor. the next day I check it and they had turned up rpms to ??? as fast as it would run and 12 refer units running off it oh it's 480 volt well it ran for a week non stop and broke down and of corse it was my fault all i did was unbolt drive plate on front of rotor from flywheel of engine .est to repair is 6,000 could this be my fault after it ran for a week or caused from hi rpms and heat related possibley
A little more information would be helpful as to the size and model of generator. Is it possible the repair shop could give you more detailed explanation as to exactly what they believe happened? Is this a single bearing or two bearing generator? If it has only one bearing and the shaft is supported by the engine flywheel on the engine end, then the postion and shimming of the engine and generator may be critical to keep the rotor centered between the stator poles. These clearances are very small and they could have been rubbing if not aligned. On small single bearing types, the housings are made to fit together in perfect alignment, and can not be misaligned to avoid this problem. On larger units, this matched housing arrangement may not be possible. A generator with a bearing at each end of it's shaft is less likely to have this problem of rotor alingment, It would have a problem with coupling or bearing failures if not properly aligned with the engine. Q:Having lots of diesel fuel to make electricity (200-800KW)is it better to use a diesel generator or a steam turbine?(Remember : the only way to produce steam is burning diesel)Does anybody know how many KWh can make per 1000gal?
You cannot even run a turbine from saturated steam. The blades get eroded by the water droplets, and your turbine flys apart with a big BOOM. So you would have to buy a new boiler as well as the turbine. Then you need a condenser, feed pump, piping, controller. the list goes on and on.

I was notified about a skills test and was hoping to brush up a bit before the test. Which areas should I focus on studying? Also what can I expect on a day to day basis working in this field? And lastly, although I can troubleshoot and wire a jumbo liner in my sleep I don't have specific experience with large generators and motors. How will this affect me in the hiring process.
