Thanks.: A generator is usually powered by a diesel or gas (petrol) engine which powers an alternator to produce mains power for hours provided it is topped up with fuel. A UPS uses a large battery and a high powered inverter circuit to produce mains power but is not expected to power equipment for very long, just long enough to shut them down safely without loss of data.

Q:I know that they could re-surface to re-establish a normal supply of air but what about when they were under attack and couldnt surface for long periods of time,wouldnt those engines use up a lot of the oxygen inside the sub?: As others have stated the diesel engines could be used under water only with a snorkle system which wasn't very practical to do if you were indeed under attack. The have ports at the engine room to take in combustion air (oxygen) and to exhaust the combustion gases. The generator/motor was built inline with the drive shaft to the main propeller. As the diesel engine powered the prop it used the generator/motor to charge a bank of batteries. When the sub went under the diesel engines were shut off and the sub was powered by the battery bank. There is a huge switch station just to the rear of the engine room for this purpose.

He had to synchronize two generators at that point. I'm sure you can find the answer there.

Q:I just purchased a KOHLER generator 500 KVA would it be safe to run at 10 % load for 6-8 hours: 500 kva is a big generator and I am guessing it is diesel. It is safe to run at 10% load however it is not good for the engine itself to make a practice of that. It can lead to lower cylinder temperatures and incomplete combustion over time. It is always better to run at or as close to max load as you can.

As to the amount of current you wish to get that would depend on other set up and implements that you hook to the generator. You may need more than 1 generator to get the total amperage that you are looking for. See the equipment specs.
