- Q:I was given a 8ft 8 in x 12 ft 2 in persian rug that is in superb condition. It is authentic, but can not find out how much it is worth. I know that it cost 2,000 dollars 30 plus yrs ago, but am clueless on what it would go for these days. Could anyone give me some advice on how to find it's worth. - we use Sprayway Glass Cleaner on our stainless things. it doesn't contain ammonia which leaves a film on s.s. and that is what attracts dirt and fingerprints. it's great on windshields, too.

- Q:I've recently noticed rugs popping up on my yards in the evenings, it goes down to around 4oC here at night right now, and all horses are in their own fields, not in a herd. I personally am not too sure on rugging yet. My mare is a 16.2, 10 year old Irish Sports Horse, and I simply refuse to clip her for my own reasons. She has been rugged for most of her life with her old owner, and obviously it's unfair of me to deny her rugging now, so no rug is not an option.I was just wondering how cold it has to get before you start rugging. - I agree with the fact that horses have their natural central heating when the weather get cold BUT and this is a very important factor, in the UK our winters are inclined to be very wet often accompanied with a bitter cold wind and no stock likes being soaking wet and very cold. At the moment my mares, foals and two year old horses are all out with no rugs, the weather has been extraordinarily mild and most importantly dry. I would hold off rugging until the wet weather moves in. Some people are getting beyond ridiculous with rugging the moment they think that it is going to get 'cold' and leaving them on during the day whereby the poor animals are sweating. Several days this week I have turned my clipped horses out naked as the weather has been so warm(they come in late afternoon)

- They should be washed regularly to help keep your horse's coat clean and healthy. This is every rug - indoor, outdoor, fleeces, sheets etc. The easiest way to clean it yourself is to get a big tub (a bath will do!) and fill it with hot water and soap flakes (get something suitable for washing baby clothes in and make sure it is non bio) - I use something called Granny's Soap Flakes, get them in Tesco :). Put the rug in the water with the soap flakes and use a brush or a stick or something to move it round and clean it thoroughly. You might want to leave it to soak for a little while first. If it's really muddy, I suggest hosing it off with the hosepipe first to get the worst off. Then once you've cleaned it as much as you can in the tub, rinse thoroughly and hang out to dry. You may need to wash it more than once if it's very dirty. They will need to be re-proofed at least every other winter or they will not keep your horse dry. To be honest, I find it easier to get my rugs cleaned professionaly. Most places offer a collection/delivery service and it's not expensive - usually about ?12 for a turnout wash and ?10 for a stable. That's not bad when you consider how much time and effort you have to put into washing it yourself! Plus they get them much cleaner!!

The best way to tell if there's moisture in a carpet is you rub the back of your hand on it and then look at your hand,,,no moisture seen is a good sign,,,then blow on your hand,,if it feels very cold,,,there may be minute amounts of moisture in carpet. also,,,you didn't have your carpets shampoo'd,,you had them extracted.
