As pointed out generators convert mechanical energy into electricity. The mechanical energy is provided by an engine that uses some type of fuel like diesel or natural gas. All generators spin to produce power. well then how come a generator work without the help of anything? Backup generators do seem to magically produce electricity during a power failure Backup generators are fitted with automatic controls that handle the starting and placing of the generator onto the buildings power bus. The automatic controls are powered from the AC mains to keep a set of batteries charged. THe batteries are used at the beginning of a blackout to power the automation and start the generator. (Once the generator is running these batteries may then be recharged from the power produced by the generator or when the AC mains is re-established.) Electronic controls sense the loss of AC power and trigger a starting sequence. The generators starter is engaged to crank over the diesel or Gas engine. The controls monitor this process to ensure the engine actually starts and that an excessive amount of cranking doesn't occur. Once the engine is running and brought up to proper speed additional automatic controls disconnect the now powerless AC mains from the buildings buss and connect the Generator power to the buildings electrical panel. Based upon the size of the generator some or all of the buildings power may be supplied by the backup generator. Without the automation the process is still the same except a persone would have to perform the process of starting the gen and placing it on line. Its not difficult to do but does require some trainng. Automation performs this startup process quicker that what a humam would be likely to do.
Q:I need a means of driving a 3 horsepower induction motor re-purposed as an induction generator which would coincide with specific cost-effective parameters. If you are serious about selling power to your utility; ask if they will accept inverter output. If so, an inverter can lock phase with fairly simple circuitry. Using HD diode isolation simplfies voltage matching. You would be wiser to generate low voltage DC from solar panels or a wind turbine. (Noise and pollution free.) Talk to a utility rep first to learn their requirements.
Q:Basically, I want to set up the new homestead off grid and would like to do it with a diesel generator to a DC disconnect, to a charge controller, to a battery bank, to the system meter, to the main DC disconnect, to an inverter, then to an AC breaker panel. Just like a solar array system but using the diesel instead of panels for the first year or two. The home will be using no more than about 22kWH daily. I guess the main question is how do I use a diesel generator in place of 19, 210W solar panels without running the generator 24-7?
Well, you're hitting one of the major problems of the modern age: storing electricity is very expensive. Batteries are bulky, costly, and you lose ~20% of your power just going in and out of the battery (the inverter will cost you another ~10%). But if you're willing to buy enough batteries you can store as much electricity as you want.

1 Kwh 3.6 MJ. If you use each light 4 hours per day, and each was 100 watts, that is 4 x 100 x 10 x 365 1,460,000 watt hours per year. That requires 1,460 x 3.6 MJ 5,256 MJ. / 0.4 efficiency 13,140 MJ. So you need 13,140 / 36MJ/L 365 Liters of diesel. If you used CFLs, at 25 watts, the answer is 1/4 of that, so 365 / 4 91.25 Liters of diesel. So the savings is 365 - 91.25 273.75 Liters savings. At $1.25 per liter, that is $324.19.

Q:I have a 4 piston Diesel engine on my generator, I have a nasty oil sludge continue to build up every time, I have flushed the engine with engine flush liqui-moly probably six times, but after it is clean the sludge builds up again in couple of days, I got sick and tired of going down there and get all messed up with nasty oil.The engine produces while smoke continuously, not much but visible enough. I get oil coming onto the air filter, the place smells nasty because of this. The light bulbs flicker when running on the generator, it heats up fast and shuts off when I put load on it as an AC. Can someone please help me out and let me know what to do?
The sludge is an indication of coolant leaking into the oil, as is the white smoke and the fact its over heating, This is due to either a cracked water jacket or sleeve or cylinder head and or gasket, As to what to do? Have it properly diagnosed by a qualified mechanic and if need be rebuild the engine or replace it. As replacing the cylinder sleeves at a reputable shop can cost as much as a new engine.

Why would the numbers for India be different from those for Lesotho or Poland for a comparable generator? Beyond the size of generator you need to figure the efficiency of the diesel. A modern one in good repair will require less fuel than an old, worn-out one.
Q:Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. Am I mistaken? - And I mean no offense to the great people of Japan who so valiantly dealt with the terrible tsunami crisis that I admire this very much. Thank you.
