Q:I was considering adding Kuhli loaches or pygmy corydoras to my betta/shrimp tank, the problem is I have thick quartz grabel which is too sharp for them. The pet store worker told me it would be fine if I rinced the gravel lots of times with high pressure water (shower), but I have doupts. Is this true? If not is there another way to smooth out quartz? It's been in this tank for around 4 months now.
This is a difficult question to answer because quality plays a big role in the value- especially for amethyst. Smoky quartz is fairly inexpensive- perhaps one dollar per carat. It can cost more if it is exceptionally beautiful or is intricately cut or carved. Amethyst is a difficult stone to separate from synthetic amethyst. It is hard to tell a real one from a laboratory-grown crystal. But real amethyst can be worth a few dollars per carat for typical natural material all the way up to several hundreds of dollars per carat for very fine material from Zambia or Siberia that shows a red-flash effect.
Q:I found this awesome rock full of quartz but it is also half limestone.
To answer this you need to understand the nature of magma sources and whoever gave you the questions needs to be more technically accurate as the issue is silica content not quartz content. AND you need to understand what Bowen's Reaction Series tells us to expect within magmas. 1. mantle infilling at the mid oceanic ridge as an example. highly mafic mantle material such as Olivine-- low in silica( SiO2 or SiO3 or SiO4). Grain size is governed by cooling rates not content so this answer is fine-ground mass owing to rapid cooling. fine-grained low silica 2. partial melting suggest low temperature and as silica/quartz has the lowest temperature of the silicates in Bowen's reaction series this answer is quartz. partial melting also suggest lower heat content leading to faster cooling and produces a finegrained ground mass bubt instead of mafic lava it is felsic and in the category of ryolite basalt. High silica grainsize could be large pwing to prior crystallization See for example Orbicular Granite 3. quartz but because a differentiated magma has already lost the bulk of early crystallizing minerals of Bowen's series (the higher temperature of solidus ones) such that mainly quartz is left for the remix. this magma is said to be enriched in silica and is very viscous (thick) creating rather vicious volcanic eruptions. silica=viscous=vicious is the mnemonic Assimilation is incorporation of the country rock as it ascends and that is usually but not always higher in silica this situation also suggests substantial chilling leading to fine-grained mass. TO reiterate: grain size related to cooling rates.
Q:Somethings might be color of the quartz ie. staining.I have found some that looks like the quartz was spray painted with a light coat of gold Could this be pyrite? Or a red color etc.
Titanium Quartz Crystal
Q:I just recently purchases a Tag Aqua Racer watch and it is quartz movement. I remember the salesman also mentioning an automatic movement. Can someone please tell me the difference?
The price will depend on if the fabricator has to order the tops in already fabricated or if they can do it themselves. For instance, my company orders Zodiaq quartz slabs in and then we can fabricate them in our own shop. Hanstone is actually more expensive because we are not a certified distributor or fabricator, therefore, someone else needs to do it for us creating another middleman. I would shop around and ask if they fabricate themselves and see if you can get a feel for what brand you should be looking for. LG Viatera quartz is also another quartz material you may want to look at. LG's HiMac solid surface is very competitive, I would imagine their quartz would be as well. Some big boxes (such as Lowe's and Home Depot) have set pricing and programs with specific companies such as DuPont, LG, Silestone, etc and those materials are more reasonable because they get better deals from their vendors because of how large they are. Another lead you may look into, is finding a Formica distributor nearby. Formica has discontinued their quartz distribution and you may be able to find what you need at a discounted price since the slabs are probably just taking up space. Good Luck!!!!
Q:I would like to buy a quartz or amethyst pendulum. But how do I know that it is of good quality?
A typical rock grinder can handel quartz. Its just large wheels with very strong teeth imbeded in the wheels, a funnel hopper feeds the wheels, and powerfull moters/ with gears to give masive power at low speed... You can buy comericial amounts of quartz that is all of a size that the grinder can handel... Actually i bet you could just buy the ground crystal but if your doing it as a business? What eves... So im guessing you want very fine powders? If said grinder doesnt satisfy you could always run through a second process, say a smasher... Some machine that uses a large weight and repeatedly drops it on the product. ...another thought Nature does it with water. Freeze thaw cycles, waves, roots... Good luck!
Q:For those familiar with mineralogy, it seems like a pretty basic question, but for some reason I don't know the answer, and its not really clearly outlined in my textbook. P.S. If you love answering geology Q's, stick around the geology section I'll have several over the next few days haha.
Quartz has a chemical composition of SiO2, and Si is the most common/abundant rock forming mineral on Earth's crust. Therefore it is found in sandstone (sedimentary), which is very smaill sand sized grains of SiO2 cememented together. It is common in other sedi rocks such as shale and an accessory mineral in calcium carbonate rocks. As a metamorphic rock, a sandstone composed of quartz can become highly metamorphosed by tectonic activity( compression from heating and pressure) resulting in quartzite. Other metamorphic rocks containing quartz are shist and gneiss. Just incase you didn't know, quartz can actually be in sedimentary, metamorphic OR igneous rocks.
Q:Describe how piezo electricity can be observed using two pieces of quartz?
If it will scratch glass it's probably quartz although it's impossible to definitively identify it from a photo.
Q:Which is a better watch? i saw a invicta watch for 94 dollar automatic selfw wind and a swiss quartz with 3 small clock in middle for 107.how do you wind a swiss quartz watch?automatic self wind is based on hand movement, right?thanks in advance
If you would look up quartz you would see it is SiO2 so the answer is Oxygen. Why didn't you do a search for quartz, instead of using Answers in Yahoo?
Q:is there a fundamental difference between milky quartz, smoky quartz and rose quartz?
An expensive quartz watch is a 9.95 movement set in a piece of expensive jewelry.
Q:I recently bought a pretty little necklace that was supposed to be quartz, but it is so clear and flawless white that I suspect it is actually glass. How can I tell?
Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system. The ideal crystal shape is a six-sided prism terminating with six-sided pyramids at each end. This will give you 14 vertices, 30 edges and 18 faces
We are one of the earliest companies to develop the production of quartz glass products in China. We have the best comprehensive processing ability, and a variety of testing technologies. We have strong technology and many talents engaged in the processing of quartz glass and advanced production equipment. The melting point of our products is up to 1730 degrees.
